0: Byron's Gourmet Bar-B-Que
Mon-Sat 11-7. Closed Sun & Tues.
Take out joint in Acres Homes, run by Byron Johnson, 16 years in business. Low smoke, heavy sauce, chewy brisket and ribs. Pecan and Pin Oak. Some indications that homemade links and boudin are good.

Chain out of Dallas; brisket was pure roast beef (i.e. not good), sides were average. Ribs were admittedly tasty, maybe even addictive: St. Louis cut, crispy bark, moist inside, pull-off-the-bone with a sweet wet mop. Lacked smoke however.

Unfortunately there's not much good to say about this old-school BBQ joint in far southwest Houston. Neither the ribs for brisket had a trace of smoke. This must be what boiled meat tastes like. Unrendered brisket was trimmed of any remnants of fat. Ribs were big, tender and skunky. I'd give this place a second chance, but I'm pretty sure this is the standard offering.

Located in a spiffy strip mall on Long Point, surrounded by taquerias and taco trucks, the sign here says "BAR-B-Q" and that's exactly what you get. Nothing fancy here - big portions of tender ribs and well-rendered brisket with good flavor but light on the smoke.

Owned by Kathy Braden, daughter of legendary Houston pitmaster Roy Burns, this new location for Burns BBQ offers a spacious and bright update from the old De Priest location. Alas, the last few visits here have yielded woefully undersmoked barbecue. Indeed, there's nary a scent of smoke when you walk in to the place, making you wonder where the meat is being smoked.

Goode Co. BBQ is like a talented but underachieving athlete I want to grab by the shoulders and yell: "Try harder! You can be great!" The ribs and brisket here are strongly infused with the flavor of mesquite (for which I give high marks), but are consistently chewy and dry. Sausage is top notch and the pecan pie, even at $5 a pop, is almost worth the trip alone.

Luling City Market offers above average (for Houston), but mostly uninspired, barbecue in the Central Texas style. Famously, this joint is a copy of City Market in Luling, especially the mustard-based sauce. Counter people pull the meat out of steam table and carve it in front of you. Smoke levels are lighter than the real stuff in Central Texas, but it's an option for anyone craving this style.
