Do you need to brush up your English? O forse il tuo Italiano è un po’ arrugginito? Maybe you’d like to learn more about art history? The British Institute, where you can do all this, has been present in Florence since 1917 and was the first of the British cultural institutes to operate overseas. In fact, it served as a model for the establishment of the British Council in 1934.
The institute has always worked hard to forge relationships between the local and visiting populations of Florence with cultural events and a range of courses available to all. It is a University of Cambridge exam centre and can also give Italian authentication to educational certificates from Anglophone countries.
The British Institute today is not only an important centre for learning, but also a great place to meet people. While you’re there you can also pick up a copy of The Florentine!

Il Salotto di Firenze is a unique B&B in the heart of downtown Florence. Housed in a palazzo from 1860, the building witnessed first hand the ‘Macchiaioli’ painting movement that was developing around Piazza della Repubblica. In fact, all six of il Salotto’s rooms are named after a renowned Macchiaioli artist. The (ethic) style doesn’t change according to the fashion of the moment but instead develops according to the designers’ creativity and unerring choices of original styles and colors—all made in limited quantities. Florence Boasts World’s Best New Hotel
Riva gets top honours from British style magazine Wallpaper
The Riva lofts is a new hotel, designed by architect Claudio Nardi and housed in an old factory in the working-class Isolotto neighbourhood in Florence.
Internationally renowned British style magazine, Wallpaper, recently deemed it the ‘Best New Hotel’ in the world. The structure overlooks the banks of the Arno river and consists of nine suites that mix metropolitan design with a homey, welcoming style. Many historic elements of the building were maintained but revamped (modern antiques, 1950s furniture, wooden moulding, the sophisticated kitchen design, etc.), which contributed to the magazine’s decision. The jury consisted of Japanese architect Tadao Ando, designer Patricia Urquiola and fashion designer Donatella Versace.

Italian language courses are small (maximum 7 students) and tailored to the learning requirements of each student. Intensive and one-on-one courses are also available. In addition to the cultural and language programs, students can take advantage of a variety of extra-curricular activities each week, including films, evenings out, visits to Florentine museums, and day trips to Tuscany’s most well-known medieval towns.

The inside of Mama's Bakery on a Saturday morning is a perfect snapshot of downtown Florence: American girls in workout clothes leave with cups of coffee in hand, ready to enjoy on their leisurely walk home; a group of Florentine moms sit and chat, their bundled-up babies grabbing at their blueberry muffins; locals pop in to get a real New York bagel, just like the ones they ate on their last trip to the States.
It is no coincidence that the new American bakery in town is a lesson in multiculturalism: owners Cristina and Matt have brought their best Tuscan and American selves into the kitchen. After years of living in two countries, the formula they decided on was simple-think about what they miss most about American cafes and create it in Florence. The results are delicious-bagels, brownies, muffins, apple pie, chocolate chip cookies, quiche and deli-style sandwiches, American coffee and much, much more-and can be taken to go or enjoyed with a copy of The Florentine at one of the tables or oversized chairs ...just like home.

Though he has been in the beauty industry for some time, Arthur started his Florence salon nearly two years ago. After seeing how happy his clients were after having their hair styled, Arthur imagined how much more satisfied and contented they would be after experiencing full-body beauty treatments. With this in mind, he moved the salon from via Maggio to a bigger location in Piazza Pitti, where he and his staff now use Chenot's global wellness biontology method and natural cosmetics line to give their clients an all-over feeling of beauty and health, building their work around a simple but important concept: in order to love ourselves and take complete care of our bodies, beauty comes first; taking care of ourselves makes us feel better and reflects our natural beauty.
Arthur got to know The Florentine thanks to his clients who would come into the salon on Thursdays, clutching their hot-off-the-presses copies. He realized that if they felt so connected to the paper, he could provide them greater service by becoming a TF distributor. So head over to Wellness Center Pitti Palace to indulge in a new hair style, massage, facial, manicure or more, all while leisurely reading the latest issue of TF!
