	This free, informal walk is open to the general public of all ages. Recreational birders familiar with Lake Park volunteer to lead people of all skill levels to the best birding spots in the park. Beginning birders are especially welcome. Camaraderie and discussion of diverse environmental issues are encouraged. From bridges over ravines birders can look down on thrushes, sparrows, and warblers. Red-headed Woodpeckers and Eastern Bluebirds occasionally visit the woodland edges. Sandpipers, gulls and ducks migrate along the Lake Michigan shoreline.

	IT’S FOR THE BIRDS! LITTLE RIVER CANYON CENTER LAUNCHES APPALACHIAN HIGHLANDS BI...RDING TRAIL The Appalachian Highlands Birding Trail (AHBT) will be launched on International Migratory Bird Day, May 12, 2012. The Jacksonville State University Environmental Policy and Information Center (EPIC) and the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce will host the ceremony which will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Little River Canyon Center in Fort Payne, AL. The AHBT includes six gateway sites, forty birding sites and connects the North Alabama Birding Trail to the Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail. The Alabama Birding Trail offers a professionally developed birding trail system which includes directional signage, interpretive panels, kiosks, walking trails, observation towers, visitor guides and maps. Gateway sites provide knowledge and direction to visitors through expertise, interpretation and educational support. For this trail they will be established at the Little River Canyon Center, Talladega Mountains Natural Resource Center, Anniston Museum of Natural History, Oak Mountain Interpretive Center, Ruffner Mountain Interpretive Center, and Cheaha State Park. These facilities will present programs and activities that can be enjoyed by both avid birders and the amateur naturalists seeking an outdoor weekend getaway. According to EPIC Director Pete Conroy “Bird watching represents a significant portion of eco-tourism and tourism is one our nation’s most sustainable tools for economic development,” He continued, “literally billions of dollars can be traced to people who travel and vacation for wildlife observation, so there’s no doubt that this birding trail will promote our region and draw dollars to our region.” The AHBT meanders through nine Northeast Alabama counties that include Cherokee, Calhoun, Cleburne, Etowah, Talladega, Shelby, Blount, Jefferson, and St. Clair. A goal of the project is to create environmental awareness and birding opportunities “from the deepest canyon to the highest mountain” in Alabama. “Alabama is a birding paradise,” says birding trail committee member and JSU Field School Coordinator Renee Morrison. “Forests, mountains, meadows, swamps, and beaches dot the landscape, creating an abundance of avian habitats with over 400 species of bird that all grace the blue skies over Alabama,” Morrison says. Eager to have the trail established, Morrison exclaimed, “Get ready to grab your binoculars, brush up on your birding skills, and wing it to Alabama’s newest birding trail: it's for the birds!”

A new study by scientists studying the Arctic Tern shows these small birds travel 44,000 miles during their migration.

Arctic Terns breed in the high arctic, such as this small island in Greenland. Here, scientists geo-locator tagged Arctic Terns that come to breed on the island each summer. When the birds returned to their breeding sites once again the next summer, the geo-locators were recovered from the same birds.

The results tell an amazing story. Not only do these small birds fly on average 44,000 miles to Antarctica and back, different groups of birds take very different route along the way.

Esta es una actividad gratuita y abierta a la participación de todas las personas interesabas en conocer las aves y este Paraje Natural (Menores acompañados de adultos). Para ello Cigüeña negra aporta material óptico y de campo para el visitante, así como los monitores que mostrarán las distintas especies de aves que se puedan observar en cada jornada. No es necesario inscribirse, tan solo acudir cualquier día de los señalados en el calendario de días de realización que figura en este tríptico. Las personas interesadas en participar pueden realizar una visita puntual dentro del horario de observación o permanecer en el Mirador durante toda la jornada.

PROVINCIAL CONAF ISLA DE PASCUA ANTECEDENTES En isla de Pascua y el Parque Nacional Rapa Nui el temas de las aves migratorias es fundamental en lo que respecta a los recursos naturales, pero también con relación al contexto histórico y cultural de sus recursos culturales, ya que las aves en general, y en especial ciertas especies de aves migratorias jugaron un papel muy importante en la historia, la religión y la cultura de la sociedad antigua. OBJETIVO GENERAL Por ende, la Oficina Provincial de CONAF Isla de Pascua adhiere a esta iniciativa con el convencimiento de que representa una excelente oportunidad para empujar más la concientización de la comunidad con relación a la conservación de las especies de aves que aun quedan en la isla y la urgencia de proteger los frágiles sitios de habitación y nidificación, en particular los islotes circundantes. ACTIVIDADES PROGRAMADAS 1. Exposición itinerante sobre las aves migratorias de Rapa Nui y su vínculo ancestral con la comunidad: Esta exposición consistirá en 6 paneles de grandes dimensiones, montados en un sistema portátil, que se exhibirá en diferentes lugares de la isla, un día en cada uno (escuelas, sitios de uso intensivo del parque nacional y otros puntos de circulación importantes). 2. Edición y distribución de tríptico sobre el tema las aves migratorias de Rapa Nui y su vínculo ancestral con la comunidad: Complementario a la exposición y que pondrá el énfasis en la especie migratoria emblemática de Rapa Nui, el manutara. 3. Ciclo de charlas educativas: con dos temas: a) Aves de Rapa Nui; b) CONAF y la conservación de las aves marinas (incluyendo censo en isla Salas y Gómez). 4. Tutorial educativo para niños: cuyo objetivo es que los niños se familiaricen con las aves locales (migratorias y residentes), tanto párvulo como los primeros niveles de básica. 5. Evento central: lanzamiento de la campaña pública “Que vuelva el manutara”, para reunir firmas que respalden la preparación de un proyecto para intentar repoblar con esta especie la isla. 6. Difusión: habrá cobertura de prensa local y nacional, TV local, radio local, y otros medios.

Description of WMBD Event	Saint Johns Arboretum and the surrounding Avon Hills area have been designated an Important Birding Area by the Audubon Society. Join the Saint John’s Arboretum on Saturday, May 12 for a day of birding during peak migration. Unique to this bird walk, we’ll stay on the 2,740 acres of Saint Johns Arboretum and do all our birding by walking. Small groups led by experienced birders will head out to different habitats. Some groups only go a short distance and others take a longer hike. Birders of all ages and skills are welcome. In past years, more than 100 species of birds have been seen out of the 240 species that have been recorded at Saint Johns. In recent years, sitings have included the Gray-cheeked thrush, Cerulean warbler, Mourning warbler, Eastern towhee, Avocet, Harris sparrow, and more!

Description of WMBD Event	Join us for the 2012 Baillie Birdathon, the oldest sponsored bird count in North America, raising money for bird research and conservation. The challenge is to identify as many bird species as possible within a 24-hour period, during the month of May. The money raised benefits Bird Studies Canada, the James L. Baillie Memorial Fund, and participating migration monitoring stations and conservation organizations (designated by participants to receive a portion of funds raised). More than 7,000 people from across Canada (and from several countries around the world) participate in and/or sponsor Birdathon in May of every year. During a 24-hour period in May, they attempt to find as many bird species as they can, sponsored at a flat rate, or on a per-species basis. Birders can designate a favourite conservation organization to receive a portion of the funds they raise. Bird observatories can also be designated as recipients of fund raising.

This property contains outstanding hardwood and mixed floodplain forest, and provincially uncommon plants and insects. The woods host warblers, thrushes, and woodpeckers. Several small brooks pass through the property, creating the possibility of seeing flycatchers too. This walk is a great opportunity to see and hear a diversity of forest birds! Description of WMBD Event	Each year millions of birds migrate thousands of kilometers to and from their breeding homes in the northern hemisphere to Africa. Through their journey crossing the Red Sea and the Great Rift Valley, they cross a number of countries in Africa. Soaring birds make up a large component of migrants and Ethiopia receives a fair share of them. Ethiopia is on the major flyway within the Great Rift Valley providing refuge and transit for migrants from the north. The epic voyage of migrants is far from safe and is full of countless challenges. Several of these problems are indirect threats arising from agricultural and industrial development. In line with this year’s WMBD theme of “migratory birds and people together through time” and BirdLife International UNDP/GEF Migratory Soaring Birds project objective of ‘Mainstreaming’ Soaring Bird’s Conservation into Productive Sectors along the Rift Valley/Red Sea flyway, we will address the challenges that migrating birds have to prevail and promote their conservation by working with relevant stakeholders. This year’s event will be held at Berga Floodplain and it is proposed to celebrate the value of the flyway and threats posed to, migrant birds in general and soaring birds in particular, in the agricultural sector. Agriculture is a key sector of Ethiopia and with the unprecedented growth of human population over the last decade; food production will remain to be a major activity. We therefore intend to promote the event with stakeholders involved in the production of food on site, local administrative bodies and policy makers that directly influence agricultural development. At another level, since migrating soaring birds play a key role in promoting tourism in the country, the opportunities rendered by this sector will also be highlighted.

Im Biotopverbund mit den "Herbslebener Teichen" und den "Döllstädter Teich" bestehen 3 Feuchtgebiet mit einem hohen Anteil an Schilfbeständen. Die Rohrdommel als Leitart ist Brutvogel und Wintergast zugleich. Die Beobachtungen beginnen ab 8.oo Uhr MESZ und starten am Vogelbeobachtungstum auf der Uferseite von Großfahner (alte Dachwiger Staße). Gummistiefel sind sehr wichtig, ein Fernglas hilfreich!

Description of WMBD Event	The Fly-In weekend is part of the Polish National Campaign for Nature Awareness and Education “pTAK!” or “B for BIRD!” run by Polish Birds since 2010. For the second time Members of the Polish Birds Club – birds and nature enthusiasts from all over Poland - will be attending this event. The programme is packed with field excursions, arts workshops, presentations, film screenings, meetings with authors, handcraft fair and concerts. On Saturday, 19th May, there will be a jazz concert and a folk concert. On Sunday, 20th May Polish Birds will attempt to beat their own official Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Human Animal Image - a figure of the largest Greater Spotted Eagle on Earth. This record attempt will highlight a conservation project currently run by Polish Birds to save the last Greater Spotted Eagles in Poland (and EU). Greater Spotted Eagle is one of the most majestic predators migrating each year between Africa and the Biebrza Valley in Poland.

Description of WMBD Event	The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature( RSCN) aims through implementing the national component of regional UNDP GEF project to conserve over 1.5 million birds of 37 species, including 5 globally threatened species during their migration across the country of Jordan. This action is taking a place under a supervision of the BirdLife International, after the remarking decrease in amount of birds in the last decades. The project mainstreams the migratory soaring birds (MSBs) consideration within Jordan through strengthening environmental enforcement legislations by providing training to relevant stakeholders, monitoring of local markets for MSBs, developing sustainable hunting guidelines, promoting sustainable hunting at bottleneck sites, reviewing existing legislatives and regulatory enforcement incentive systems, assessing the efficiency of the existing system to support enforcement protection laws, identifying other legislations relevant to MSBs, and provide best practice and models for MSB legislations. Throughout this one day event, we will invite a representative group of hunters within the rift valley area in trying to gain a possible support from them in implementing project activities on the ground, and to promote for more friendly practices towards bird conservation in both hunting and ecotourism sectors.

Description of WMBD Event	Proyecto “Festival Día de AVES Migratorias” Cada año cientos de aves viajan desde Norte América y el sur de Sur América, hacia Centro América y Sur América en búsqueda de territorios cálidos en los que pasar la temporada invernal, a este fenómeno se le llama migración, pero debido a la destrucción del ambiente, cada vez menos aves están encontrando un lugar donde comer, dormir y pasar los meses de la temporada adversa. Por esa fomentando la capacitación y divulgación del fenómeno de la migración a las comunidades de todo el país, desde el 14 de mayo del 2011, la Secretaría del Ambiente (liderado por sus puntos focales institucionales) desarrolla los festejos del “Día de las aves Migratorias” en el que se lleva a cabo acciones de conservación y educación ambiental con las comunidades locales, en las áreas claves para la migración de las especies de aves. El “World Migratory Bird Day” se realiza todos los años por los países participantes del CMS, el segundo fin de semana cada mes de mayo, la gente de todos los lugares del planeta organizan actividades especiales para celebrar el Día Mundial de las Aves Migratorias – algunas de estas actividades incluyen viajes de observación de aves, debates públicos, exposiciones, presentaciones, festivales de las aves y otros eventos educativos y públicos. La campaña ha crecido intensamente desde su creación en 2006. El tema de cada año está referido a los problemas que amenazan a las aves migratorias durante sus rutas migratorias y sus sitios de invernada. Durante el año 2011 la campaña ha sido muy exitosa y más de 200 eventos han sido registrados en www.worldmigratorybirdday.org Es un instrumento de cooperación, promoción y divulgación para que comunidades, empresas, organizaciones sociales, personas en general, instituciones educativas e instancias gubernamentales participen y/o apoyen proyectos de conservación, desarrollo, investigación y aprovechamiento ecoturístico. Objetivos Generales 1. Involucrar a las comunidades locales en el concepto de migración . Específicos 1. Sensibilizar a las comunidades sobre la relación estrecha que existe entre las aves y las personas 2. Realizar actividades conjuntas con Grupos Ecológicos para incentivar el protagonismo de los ciudadanos en sus comunidades 3. Au niveau de Keur Macène, les activités prévues sont les suivantes : - L’implication des élèves de l’école fondamentale de Keur Macène : organisation d’un concours de dessin d’oiseaux ; jeux de théâtre par les élèves - La communication par des banderoles - Réflexion autour de la thématique des enjeux locaux sur les oiseaux migrateurs et liens culturels, économiques, environnementaux avec les hommes : thé palabre avec les pêcheurs de Dalaguana, les représentants des populations locales et des membres des coopératives de Boynayé & Avound - Séances d’observation des oiseaux avec les écoliers et les pêcheurs de Dalaguana Deux journalistes environnementalistes vont être mobilisés pour couvrir l’évènement sur le terrain : • l’un s’occupera de la production d’un film documentaire (montage d’un film à partir de séquences prises sur le terrain) ; • l’autre aura pour objectif de produire un compte rendu illustré à publier dans un journal du pays (Eveil Hebdo) A Nouakchott, il est prévu : - La diffusion d’un article sur www.beta.mr et www.cridem.org. Description of WMBD Event	Uzbekistan Society for the Protection of Birds (UzSPB) is a leading Republican conservation NGO in Uzbekistan. It joins together over 170 members and volunteers. Every year UzSPB celebrates 8 ecological dates and WMBD is one of them. In this year we plan to carry out educational action about migratory birds on one of our Important Bird Areas "Dalverzin hunting management area". The event will took place on May 5 and 6. Next educational action will cover 4 regions of Uzbekistan. It will be organized in State Universities of Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Nukus by leaders and members of UzSPB's student birdwatching clubs. In last year our Society developed and published education kit which contains manual for carrying out of ecological dates, ecological calendar and CD-disk with presentations for each ecological date. All actions are developed in an interactive way. World Migratory Bird Day was also included in this publication. Our young members will use it to organize WMBD events in Uzbekistan in this year.We also hope that this event will let us involve about 80 people. Most of them are students and people living on natural territories. Our staff downloaded WMBD posters and stickers which were also translated into Uzbek, printed and distributed in our country.

Then Burdur Wildlife Rehabilitation Center will be visited. Information about the injured migratory species will be given by the vets of the center. The interaction between migratory birds and human will be discussed with the kids and other participants. After that a rehabilitated kestrel and a white stork will be released by the kids.

Every year UzSPB celebrates 8 ecological dates and WMBD is one of them. In this year we plan to carry out educational action about migratory birds on one of our Important Bird Areas "Dalverzin hunting management area". The event will took place on May 5 and 6. Next educational action will cover 4 regions of Uzbekistan. It will be organized in State Universities of Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Nukus by leaders and members of UzSPB's student birdwatching clubs. In last year our Society developed and published education kit which contains manual for carrying out of ecological dates, ecological calendar and CD-disk with presentations for each ecological date. All actions are developed in an interactive way. World Migratory Bird Day was also included in this publication. Our young members will use it to organize WMBD events in Uzbekistan in this year.We also hope that this event will let us involve about 80 people. Most of them are students and people living on natural territories. Our staff downloaded WMBD posters and stickers which were also translated into Uzbek, printed and distributed in Uzbekistan.
