Our Gardens Inside & Out is a group show by artists who interpret flowers and gardens from different perspectives using varied art forms including paintings, prints, and sculpture. Leslie Smith III: New Paintings and Drawings- The paintings of Leslie Smith III get at their truths – or, perhaps, they’re just partial truths – through unexpected ways. His canvases are often filled with portals, curtains, earbuds, and other familiar objects. But Smith seems not to intend that these objects be read in entirely literal ways. Rather the components of his painting seem parts of arcane codes whose meanings can only begin to be opened by the viewer through concentrated study. Smith is a Yale-trained painter who has studied with such postmodernists as Mel Bochner, Carroll Dunham, and Peter Halley. This exhibition is the first solo outing in Wisconsin for Smith, an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Exhibition July 27 through September 1.
