By Jim This map shows the approximate locations of Houston-area red light cameras, according to lists published by the City of Houston. I make no guarantees about the accuracy or completeness of this map. NOTE: I need to update this map. Pearland has decided not to install red-light cameras. I need to check on the status of the Sugarland cameras. Some of the Houston intersections now have cameras pointing in more than one direction, and I need to note those. *** Indicates links to news or other info. Drive safely. UPDATE: Possible future cameras shown in yellow for Sugar Land and Pearland.

If you run a red light at the intersection of Bay Area Boulevard and El Camino Real, there's a good chance you won't be getting a citation in the mail. The intersection is one of 10 where the city of Houston has installed cameras to catch motorists who run red lights. But the intersection only has one camera, and that camera is only pointed in one direction.* * *

Michael Skadden is burning mad. The Houston attorney was ticketed in February for running a red light at the Southwest Freeway and Fountainview by one of the city of Houston’s controversial red light cameras.
also:
A Houston, Texas attorney who was mailed a red light camera ticket this week decided to burn the citation instead of pay it. Michael Skadden, a board member for the Houston chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, believes it is wrong to pay automated enforcement citations.

(2/27/07 - KTRK/HOUSTON) - Since the red-light cameras went online last year we've seen a number of images where drivers were nearly hit by other drivers running red lights.
The videos were released earlier this morning. The videos capture just how close some red light runners came to causing accidents. Car after car, rushing through a red light and almost running into someone else.More than 10% of those citations came from the intersection of Westheimer and the West Loop. There are enough close calls here that wrecker drivers actually park, and wait for accidents.

The intersection of FM 1960 and Texas 249 is now among 20 Houston intersections with a camera in place to capture images of drivers running red lights. City officials are working to put 10 more cameras online and they want to have 50 in operation by summer, said Houston Police Department spokesman John Cannon. The cameras are being placed at intersections with high accident rates, particularly those with a high volume of red light violations.

"When that light changes, if I'm first in line, I say to myself, `One-one thousand, two-one thousand, three-one thousand' (before entering the intersection)," said Grant, president of San Jacinto College's North Campus. "You can count three or four cars going through after the light changes." Grant said he's happy Houston has installed a red-light camera on the westbound I-10 feeder road at Uvalde.

As a late-model Ford Excursion made a left turn at the intersection of El Dorado Boulevard and the northbound Interstate 45 feeder road on Saturday well after the traffic signal had turned red, a nearby camera flashed. The device, which only takes photos of violators traveling east on El Dorado, is one of 10 additional cameras that were installed recently at intersections throughout Houston to capture the license plate numbers of motorists who run red lights.

Got my first photo ticket in the mail today. From West Rd. and I-45 (the most ticketed intersection in Houston I found out) Talk about a bad feeling, big brother is everywhere. IMO this type of thing, like the photo speeding ticket is BS, an invasion of my privacy...

Standing outside of a gas station on FM 2351, Cliff Patton and a friend grumbled about the latest red-light camera to be installed in the Bay Area. The device at FM 2351 and the southbound Interstate 45 feeder road started taking photographs Saturday of the license plates of motorists who run red lights traveling eastbound through the intersection, said Houston Police Department spokesman John Cannon.

Red-light cameras may be the wave of the future for some cities, but Pearland city officials expressed skepticism about the idea during a workshop meeting Monday night.
City Council is expected this summer to decide whether to purchase the cameras, which are now in operation in Houston at about 50 intersections. Houston began issuing red-light camera violations in September.
Based on a review of accident reports since 1999, Pearland Police Chief J.C. Doyle said the best locations to place red-light cameras would be along Broadway at Pearland Parkway, Cullen Boulevard, County Road 89, Miller Ranch Road and County Road 90.
