LITTLE OTIK – BROOKLYN GASTRONOMY IN KREUZBERG
Last year a wonderful restaurant run by two Brooklynites opened in Kreuzberg. The place is small and cosy and offers mouthwatering selections created with organic ingredients from local farms. Go as a small group of friends, order several dishes from the starter/appetizer menu and share them family style (my favorite: Grilled King Oyster Mushrooms & Ramsons with Smoked Ham). As a main, either the Risotto with Beet Root (heavenly!) or the Ribeye with Bone Marrow Butter... yum! Best dessert in summer: Blood Orange Granita with Sekt. SH

The recently opened bistro/café, located in Reuterstrasse near Weserstrasse in Neukölln is the perfect neighborhood place for breakfast and lunch. This week's lunch special is Brazil's national dish, Feijoada with Molho de Pimenta, toasted manioc flour and rice (5 Euros including a drink, until May 2nd). – Shopping / Mitte – DANIEL WANG'S FAVORITE RAG SHOP FOR FURNITURE Berlin is full of great spots for bargain-hunters (Mauerpark, Arena/Treptow etc), but there is one store i especially adore. I got my B+B 70s italian sofa there, my teak armchairs, and if i had a huge apartment, i'd have bought the palisander shelves and more. Any junk store is just a collection of old stuff, but the best ones are where the owner has an eye for good things, puts a reasonable price on them, but is not so obsessed with "design" or Ebay such that he marks up the price of anything halfway "cool" (Eames, Danish etc). A good store should constantly get new stock. And, it should offer real junk which you can fix up and make new with a bit of paint, shellack or (electrical) wiring. The Troedler under the S-Bahn next to the ugly red Alexa shopping center is exactly like that. It's HUGE: it's almost a mini-museum. And it's the perfect antidote to the ugly shiny Los Angeles-style hyper-consumerism next door. The owner is relaxed, friendly, and actually very smart. Always worth a visit! Daniel Wang

For those who prefer to work individually but not alone, Wostel may be your answer. Newly opened in January in Neukölln and initiated by Chuente and Marie, the space offers desks for rent on a daily or monthly basis. The bright, airy room facing the street comes with individual work spaces and one large table in Berliner style (vintage furniture). The back room with its large Persian carpet and large wooden desks is more quiet. A tiny kitchen and office essentials such as a printer, fax machine, beamer, and stationary are all at your disposal, so Wostel makes a perfect office for temporary Berliners who need to get some paper work done. A former driveway has been turned into a meeting room, available for rent for companies on hourly basis. A desk for a day is 10 Euro, a month 175 Euro; fixed deals can be arranged to accommodate your needs. NT (Photos: Marc Stefan)

Efa's has a long history – after opening its doors in the post war era it quickly became one of Germany's biggest ice cream manufacturers. In the 70s the company was sold and discontinued shortly afterwards. Now Efa's is back with the founding family; granddaughter Felicitas and her team have recently re-launched the brand. Instead of ice cream they now serve delicious Frozen Yogurt with all kinds of fresh fruit toppings, like the highly recommended pomegranate seeds, and homemade sauces (everything is organic by the way). – Food / Wedding – CEE CEE'S GUEST: OLGA BLUMHARDT RECOMMENDS "DA BAFFI"
Of course I never believed that Billy Idol's "White Wedding" was dedicated to Berlin's district. Although lately it keeps popping up as a joke; "Mitte/Pberg/Kberg is really getting on my nerves so I recently moved to Wedding. You know, Billy Idol once wrote a song about it..." Right. My point is, Wedding is the better choice to Neukölln – with or without Billy - and the first pioneers in resettling there are doing a fantastic job at it. There's “Da Baffi” at Leopoldplatz for example. For months and months the three owners put all their time and amore into turning a former hair salon into a cozy Italian restaurant that serves everything from pasta, fish and meat dishes to antipasti and dolci, every Tuesday thru Saturday. Thanks to the owners' family connections to Italy, you'll find fresh truffles and selected but affordable wines imported directly from the vignerons. Almost everything served there is homemade: the bread, the pulpo carpaccio, the taglioni or the panna brunlée (a family recipe). Their small but comprehensive “della cena” (evening menu) closes with “Bon Appetito!” and that's what you'll experience there for sure.

However for lunch you can simply walk in since they don't take reservations. The restaurant in a former washing saloon serves lunch much like in Italy's highway bistros: you order by the entrance, pay in advance, and the food is served at the table. There are two prix fixe lunches to choose from and both feature three dishes. We had a clear soup with white asparagus, “Pasta Pomodoro/Rucola” and for dessert the mascarpone-white-chocolate-cream with medlars. Delicious! I have to admit it: neither have I ever borrowed a book nor a magazine here. But in entering this amazing library, it will definitely make you want to. Forming a triangle with lovely "Panke" and the lively Badstrasse, the public library at Luisenbad was a true discovery during my latest bike cruise through Wedding. The contrast between the busy road, the little creek and the very atypical-Berlin building really vaults you into another time and setting. This feeling continues as you enter the public library's airy and rotund room through the historical façade which was built in the late 19th century. The modern part was built in 1995 by the architects Chestnutt and Niess. Although I have yet to make this happen, I keep thinking how wonderful it would be to sit in its backyard, reading peacefully. Currently Da?yeli publishing house is presenting its program there – focus is on Turkish verse and prose, political non-fiction and interculturality. (May 2nd-June 24th). Janine Sack

“Balikci Ergün” located under the S-Bahn arches close to “Bellvue”, once an illegal restaurant, is actually a fishmonger. Outside you are seated in allotments, facing the German parliament members' bizarre apartments. Inside you feel as if being on vacation in Turkey or at least somewhere outside of Berlin. That's what's so great about this place – not only are you spared from German assiduity and correctness - but spontaneous music is revered as something important to life here, along with their superb and fresh fish delivered every Monday and Friday, that are then prepared and served by the huge family. A rustling cloud of paper with handwritten declarations of love to this tiny piece of Turkey in the heart of Berlin hangs from the ceiling – so close yet so far away from the Bellvue castle and big politics. Döner. Truth be told, no Berliners want to eat it. It smells bad, tastes bad, and it's even somewhat embarrassing to walk down the street with one in your hand. People associate döner with drunk tourists shoving their faces into them while trying to smile, lettuce shreds falling out of their mouths. And we've all seen döner meat being delivered on a rusty old van, wrapped in what resembles a giant condom, stacked upon each other. So if you ever buy a döner and immediately see that cute new neighbor whom you've been wanting to meet for weeks walking towards your direction... I strongly advice you to quietly turn the corner before she catches you with that “thing” in your hand. But thankfully there are exceptions to everything. The döner from Ilker Halici's “Meraba Neuland Döner” is like no other. As far as I know it's the only organic döner place in Berlin. Everyday he prepares one real chunk of good “Neuland” meat on a skewer after marinating it for six hours. The whole thing looks really appetizing, smells good, and even their spicy sauce is tasty! "Hüttenpalast" is not a mountain hut offering Swiss delicacies but a hostel and restaurant by Silke Lorenzen and Sarah Vollmer. The duo turned the ground floor of a Neukölln backyard loft into a one-of-a-kind hostel where you lodge in old caravans or little huts and share the dooryard and bathroom with other guests. On the first floor there are the "regular" rooms with enclosed bathrooms. The backyard terrace overlooking their green garden and the restaurant facing the street offering breakfast and daily lunch menus are not exclusive for hostel guests. During my flying visit I had a “Spaghetti Lentil Bolognese” (veggie) which was yummy. And by the way, Hüttenpalast can be rented for events too. So in case you're looking for a place to party and a place for your friends to sleep in one, here you go: they can hit the hay right away. Prices single booking 40€, double booking 60€. NT

SIMPLE, TURKISH, YUMMY: GÖZLEME
Two euros for a quick bite is always a great deal. Unlike other snacks, Gözleme is never messy and perfect when you're on the go. The best ones I've had in Berlin so far are from a restaurant in Neukölln called... well, “Gözleme”. The shop is run by women only and the dough is freshly rolled out, filled and baked for you. Their menu offers fillings beyond the typical spinach or cheese options. All together a great, yummy fast food snack. NT

AS GOOD AS NEW – THANKS TO INVISIBLE MENDING
Nowadays most of us prefer to buy a new item rather than having the old one repaired, since it's actually cheaper that way. The same can be said for clothes – but your favorite sweater or the pricy knitted pieces the moths have nibbled on might be worth repairing. When I send my damaged knits to Düren, Mr. Leguiller's team cast the magic stitches on them and they come back perfect – “Die Kunststopferei” is a second-generation family-run enterprise. Prices depend on the piece's quality, knitting style, and the size of the hole, but you can pre-check by calling or sending an inquiry by email in advance. NT

TAPAS GREEK STYLE
The tavern “Ousies”, my favorite Greek restaurant in Berlin, is based on a special Greek tapas cuisine which supposedly was very popular in the the 60s and 70s. Since then, however, this style of eating has almost ceased to exist. Similar to Spanish tapas you can meet up there with friends to enjoy drinks and order plates of countless delicacies. In no time you'll see the table become packed with small bowls and dishes, and everyone digging into the niblets from all directions. You must try their special white wine “Malamatina” flavored with pine wood resin! It takes a while to get used to its unusual taste, but ever since my first visit I only drink this house specialty there. Ah, and don't forget to leave some space for desserts! SH

EATING TOGETHER, WORKING TOGETHER
News from the Nest: the Kreuzberg-based café has recently opened a co-working space on the first floor of its premises, connected to the café by a spiral staircase. This may not be the perfect place for phone-addicts, but anyone who is looking for a quiet atmosphere is invited to set up the laptop. Tickets are available at the café but you can also reserve your spot online. And the best part is: catering is at your service with a daily menu from breakfast to dinner. Service and food's qualities vary... the last time I had dinner there, food was yummy and nicely placed on the plate but the breakfast service from the other day was bizarre. I do love their back room with its super long table, which seats your 12+ best friends for a nice dinner. NT

– Food / Prenzlauer Berg – CEE CEE's GUEST: JANNA ON "NAZUNA" IN PRENZLAUER BERG After many days of waiting and searching, finally a new place for people who appreciate professional and honest culinary visions has opened in Prenzlauer Berg. The Japanese chef, Tsuki Hasegawa, offers beautiful and tasty Japanese morsels such as bento boxes (regular or veggie), salads with exquisite and inventive dressings, and classic rice balls wrapped with nori-seaweed. Sven Schumacher, the pâtissier, presents superb sweets such as rice cakes, tartlets, chocolate with bean paste, matcha and many more. Everything is created with great love for detail and offered for a truly fair deal! Additionally there are Japanese teas plus a lovely smile with anecdotes about the food and its origin. On a side note, if you feel like asking Tsuki about how the current situation in Japan is affecting her business, she will gladly answer you regarding controls and shortages as well as on their commitment to recreate Japanese recipes using local ingredients - which are nothing short of excellent! NOT YOUR ORDINARY POTATO
Last year Bixels opened in Mitte and has gained many fans and regulars in a short period. Not surprising, since you'll find Berlin's best baked potatoes here. If you're thinking of a simple baked tuber, you're likely to be disappointed. With a smorgasbord of toppings such as salads, veggies, meat, etc., Daniel Bixel and his team turn this rather unspectacular side dish into a colorful meal. My current fave is the one featuring matjes (salt herring). To sum it up: lovely service, yummiest food and one of this city's most beautiful interiors. SH

If you happen to spend some time in lovely Kreuzberg 69, (the Kreuzberg area around Mehringdamm/Gneisenaustrasse), don't forget to stop at Vanille & Marille. This little ice cream manufacturer was recommend to me by different people so I finally went... and yes I second that! Creamy, fruity, yummy and made from 100% natural ingredients. Besides the classics there's a fine selection of special flavors such as "Caramel Buerre Salé" or "Café Noir" (chocolate, coffee and sherry), but also the fruit choices like passionfruit are amazing! In Germany people don't pay a lot of attention to them, although ever since "Persepolis" has been released, most people know that comics aren't made only for children. There are credible documentary-style comics such as "Palästina" by Joe Sacco or truly amazingly illustrated books by Muñoz & Sampayo. The deeper you dive into the different genres and styles the more passionate you will become. This specific combination of images and texts is like a frenzy, a fantastic escape from daily life, and of course the best bathroom reading material. At comic library Renate you can start with just a tiny rental fee. Sandra Tebbe

– Food / Neukölln – SAUVAGE – PALEOLITHIC CUISINE
The Paleolithic age started about 2.6 million years ago and was the time when our great ancestors still lived in caves. But you don't need to worry about bone-picking now – the charming little restaurant near Maybachufer serves only civilized food. The idea is based on a gluten free, low carb cuisine featuring loads of nuts, seeds and herbs. Their small menu offers a variation of starters such as the grain-free crisp bread with arugula pesto dip and great salad choices. The daily menu offers three main dishes and desserts, which reveals the Oriental/French influences of the Persian/Belgian chefs. However, there are international classics too, like Chili con Carne (à la Sauvage). The food is super fresh, healthy and tasty and comes with surprising ingredients and combinations such as the strawberry reduction next to champignon burger. Unfortunately quite pricey but 100% organic.

If MacGyver was living in Berlin, he would without a doubt be a regular at Klebeland, a shop dedicated to tapes and only tapes... and I mean a whole myriad of tapes, in many different variations. CEE CEE'S GUEST: NIKOLAUS HURLBRINK ON MR. MINSCH'S CAKES
Off the beaten path, at Yorkstrasse 15, you'll find the cake oasis of Andreas Minsch. Surrounded by numerous plants and flowers and a little fountain, the huge window pane allows you to peep inside the bakery. Here you can watch the confectioner and his apprentices at work. The shop comes in a fifties look, decorated with cream white tiles. To choose your cake you have to check out the assortments in the vitrine. They offer cherry-vanilla crumble, cinnamon rolls, pastries, cookies, and sumptuous cream tartes. On Sundays the assortment is bigger but likewise the number of customers. A piece of cake is three Euros - so fantastic and so huge it feeds two. You'll find more impressions of Mr. Misch's repertoire from their chocolate artworks to multi-leveled wedding cakes on Facebook. Nikolaus Hurlbrink

Once you enter their Neukölln-premise you can forget about the hectic life outside. The “Tao Yoga” they teach is very different from the classic Indian yoga; instead of the "downward facing dog" you practice the “sleeping tiger” (trial lessons by appointment only). Besides that the duo offers healing sessions based on Korean healing massage and remedies such as Moxa – according to your personal condition – I've tried it and can highly recommend it. Additionally the couple has just opened their center in Blankenfelde last weekend.
