President Obama's Middle East Trip

President Obama travels to the Middle East this week, with stops in Israel, the West Bank and Jordan. Several of the landmarks the president is visiting are symbolic for Israel's statehood and for his personal faith. Here is an outline of where he plans to visit.

At the arrival ceremony, President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will welcome the president. All three leaders will give speeches. After the ceremony, Obama will view an Iron Dome battery, which the U.S. has committed to give hundreds of millions of dollars to develop.

1: President of Israel Residence

After leaving the airport, Obama heads to the residence ofPeres for a policy meeting. He will be greeted by a youth choir and plant atree in the residence garden.

2: The Prime Minister Residence

Following meetings with Peres, Obama then goes to Netanyahu’s residence for bilateral talks, a press conference, and a working dinner. White House officials say the twoleaders have spent more one-on-one time together than any other world leaders. Thepresident concludes his first day at Netanyahu’s residence.

3: Israel Museum

On Thursday, Obama goes to the Israel Museum to view the Dead Sea Scrolls at the Shrine of the Books. The scrolls are an ancient connection for the Jewish people to the region. Also at the museum, the president will visit the technology exposition to see Israel’s contributions to innovation.

“Seeing the ancient connection through the Dead Sea Scrolls and then the future that is being forged in Israel through the technology exposition I think will be a very powerful experience,” Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said.

4: Ramallah

After the morning's events, the president then travels to Ramallah, to have bilateraltalks with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. Following theirmeeting, the two leaders will hold a press conference and have a working lunch.

Obama will join Palestinian Authority Prime Minister SalamFayyad at the Al-Bireh Youth Center in Ramallah to meet with Palestinian youngpeople.

5: International Convention Center

Following his meeting in Ramallah, Obama travels back to Israel to deliver a speech to Israeli university students at the Jerusalem International Convention Center. He’ll focus on a broad theme of cooperation between the two nations on security and economic issues.

6: President of Israel Residence

The president will conclude his evening with a state dinnerat the home of Peres, where several Israeli officials will attend. Last year atthe White House, Obama presented Peres with the Medal of Freedom.

7: Mount Herzl

Obama starts his third day by visiting Mt. Herzl, the national cemetery of Israel, to lay a wreath at the gravesites of Zionist visionary Theodor Herzl and the late Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

8: Yad Vashem

Following his trip to Mt. Herzl, the president will travel to Israel’s memorial to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust, Yad Vashem. He will lay a wreath and give a speech at the memorial, which he visited in 2008 when he was still a senator.

11: Petra
