A procession is held to commemorate Good Friday in the traditions of the Iberian peninsula - St. Joseph's Church was administered by the Portuguese Mission from Macau. The section of Queen Street behind St. Joseph's Church turns into a sea of candlelight each Good Friday.

Mercantile Institution was a private school and one of the first schools to restart classes after the war ended. Many boys who had their school interrupted by the war enrolled here before transferring to public schools when those restarted some years after the war ended. 'Mercantile' was often mispronounced as something that sounded like "makan tahi", which in Malay means 'eat shit'.

St. Joseph's Church (Portuguese Mission) – Memories connected with Queen Street
A one hundred year old beautyA sea of candlelight The church was referred to as the Portuguese Church. It was part of the Portuguese mission and administered through the Diocese of the former Portuguese colonies of Goa (up to 1886), and then Macau (up to 1999), (the Catholic churches in Singapore were administered primarily by the French mission and later transferred to the Archdiocese of Singapore). The church building we see today was completed in 1912, making 2012 the 100th anniversary of the building. It was blessed by the Bishop of Macau on 30 June 1912.A lost lane between Waterloo and Bencoolen Streets.
