Mercantile Institution was a private school and one of the first schools to restart classes after the war ended. Many boys who had their school interrupted by the war enrolled here before transferring to public schools when those restarted some years after the war ended. 'Mercantile' was often mispronounced as something that sounded like "makan tahi", which in Malay means 'eat shit'.
