9th June 2013 Celebrate International Archives Day in Lebanon All over the world, and for the first time in Lebanon, archivists are joining together on 9 June to allow the public to discover the unique heritage that they preserve. In Beirut, the day will be celebrated by all partnering institutions opening their doors to the public, offering guided tours and displaying examples from their collections. إحتفل باليوم العالمي للأرشيف في لبنانفي جميع أنحاء العالم ولأول مرة في لبنان، أمناء المحفوظات والأرشيف ينضمون معاً في تاريخ 9 حزيران لفتح أبوابهم للجمهور لتشجيعهم على إكتشاف التراث الفريد الذي يحافظون عليه. بمناسبة هذا اليوم ستفتح المؤسسات المشاركة ابوابها للجمهور وتؤمّن لهم الاطلاع على أرشيفها وتقدم جولات مصحوبة بمرشدين. اليوم العالمي للأرشيف (9 حزيران) هو مبادرة من قبل المجلس الدولي للأرشيف (www.ica.org) في عام 2007.

The An-nahar Information Center was established in 1967. Since then, it has scanned and digitized the complete archive of the An-nahar newspaper. The Information Center also holds a rich photographic archive of approximately two million photographs.

1: Arab Center for Architecture

The Arab Center for Architecture (ACA) is a non-profit institution founded in Beirut in 2008. ACA is creating an archive of architecture documents regarding 20th century architecture and urbanism in the Arab World. The Center opens its doors to share with the public a collection of documents, drawings and photographs related to architecture in Lebanon. On display are also books related to architecture in the region.

2: Lebanese National Library

The Lebanese National Library succeeds to the historical Great Library of Beirut, inaugurated in 1922 and closed in 1979 during the war. It will open to the public in 2015 in its future premises in Sanayeh. To celebrate International Archives Day, the Library will exhibit, in its current location (Port of Beirut), a selection of its treasures: one of the first Arabic printed Biblia Sacra from the 17th century, the first issues of Arabic periodicals, illustrated Orientalists works, Lebanese printed books from the 19th century, and some surprising Lebanese books from the 1950s.

3: Arab Image Foundation

The Arab Image Foundation (AIF) is a non-profit organization dedicatedto the collection, preservation and study of photography and other visual material from the Middle East, North Africa and the Arab Diaspora. An exhibition of black-and-white photographs of children at school, play or work will be on display.

4: Instituto Cervantes de Beirut

The Instituto Cervantes is a public Spanish institution whose mission is the diffusion of the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures. The institute welcomes you to its exhibition, ‘De Madrid au Ciel de Beyrouth’, which will unveil for the first time a part of its photographic archives. The exhbition reveals through photographs the cultural life at cultural centres in Beirut and the lives of the city’s expatriates.

5: IRAB Association at Metro Al Madina

Irab is an organization that aims at collecting, preserving and spreading Arab and Eastern musical heritage. To date, Irab has archived 15,000 hours of music recordings, some dating back as far as a century. IRAB will open its doors to the public and offer visitors to Metro Al Madina the chance to listen to recordings from 1920-1970 with an additional lecture on musical archives by Dr. Mahmoud Zabawi.

8: The Fouad Debbas Collection

The Fouad Debbas Collection is a private collection of more than 40 000 images from the Middle East (Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Egypt and more). This unique collection plays an important role in the conservation and preservation of modern Lebanese heritage. A selection of albumen prints, stereoscopic views and postcards from the 1880s to the 1960s in Lebanon will be on display.

Visits will be in English and French only.
