Synclinorium Project Rationale
• MCM needs to increase its production from the Synclinorium ore body to fill up the void to be created by the closure of Mindola North and Central Shafts.

Near Future Scenario
• Mindola North shaft reserves to be depleted by 2012.
• Central shaft reserves to be depleted by 2014.
• Resultant drop in ore production - 1.8Mtpa by 2015.
• 1.8Mtpa will be uneconomical for Mopani
Benefits of Synclinorium Shaft
• Investment of US$206 million
• Extend the mine life by 25 years.
• Creation of 500 jobs during construction.

• Retention of 2000 plus employees.
• Increase ore production from 3.5 to 5.2Mtpa
• Reduce operational costs through hoisting 5.2Mtpa two shafts instead of
four.
