In Kenya, schools are a focal point of our work, through the provision of rainwater harvesting tanks and ecosan toilets.

Narok South, Kenya This is an exciting project some 140 kilometres west of Nairobi in which we are helping the community with ecosan toilets, a large rainwater reservoir, a small livelihood opportunity and a tree nursery. These facilities will work in tandem with the pastoralist nature of the local population.

2: Wendy Mandy - local dispensary
Shela, Lamu, Kenya Wendy Mandy's fundraising efforts have enabled her to build a dispensary that encompasses western and complementary medicine in Kenya, which has an ecosan toilet on site. So far Wendy has built 2 consulting rooms, a medicine store, a birthing room and a large waiting room. Alongside this there are 2 consulting rooms for massage, reflexology and homeopathy.

4: Alive & Well: clean water for villages in Pujehun
Pujehun, Sierra Leone In collaboration with our sister charity Wherever the Nee, we have raised funds to provide clean water for these three villages. A team from the UK went to Sierra Leone in October 2010 with a new drill rig and vehicle, and trained a local crew in borehole drilling and well construction. This will have the dual benefit of providing safe, clean water and a livelihood opportunity for the drilling crew.

5: Busu
Busu, Sierra Leone
Busu village is an impoverished subsistence farming community of 600 people, who had no clean water or sanitation. We have raised funds to provide two wells with hand pumps and four twin (male/female) community eco-sanitation toilets at different locations within the village. 6: Futa secondary school
Futa, Sierra LeoneWe have secured the funding to build a new secondary school in Futa. This will be located on a spacious level site just outside of the village, with room to construct the new school building, an ecosan toilet and washing unit, and a well and hand-pump. There will also be space for a sports and recreation field.

7: Gbongay
Gbongay, Sierra LeoneIn 2006, we were asked for help in the provision of sanitation, water and livelihoods to Gbongay. We discovered an area ravaged by civil war and with a minimal level of infrastructure. On average, one child under the age of five died every six weeks because of non-existent sanitation and polluted water. Since installing community ecosan toilets and wells, not one child has died from intestinal illness. 40% of the village population has been offered a livelihood opportunity of beekeeping or carpentry, which have been a great success.

8: Gbongay Maternity Unit
Gbongay, Sierra LeoneCurrently there are no maternity facilities in Pejeh Chiefdom, and very little medical care of any kind. We are seeking funding to build a small Maternity Unit in Gbongay village, which will act as a centre for all women in the chiefdom. This will be built next to the new children's clinic that has recently been completed, so medical equipment and staff can be shared between both units.

9: Gbongay primary school ecosan and well
Gbongay, Sierra Leone
Gbongay primary school was rebuilt in 2008, but the children and staff had to walk into the village to use the toilets and fetch water. We secured funding to build an ecosan toilet including an integral washing area, with separate sections for boys and girls, and a new well and pump for the school. A small garden is also being established next to the ecosan, to take advantage of the compost produced, which will provide a valuable nutritional supplement for school meals.

10: Holy Rosary Primary School for Girls

This school, like many others, suffered greatly during the civil war. The school had no useable sanitation and very limited water supply. An eco-sanitation toilet block has been built, which will provide effective and secure sanitation for all the pupils and staff. This will transform the wellbeing of the whole community, giving them the good health to be able to take up education and livelihood opportunities.

13: Koiva School
Koiva, Sierra Leone The existing Koiva primary school building is in such bad condition that all classes now have to be held outside. The children are not able to go to school on rainy days, so their education is badly disrupted. We have funding available to completely rebuild the school, using a design successfully used in neighbouring Gbongay village. We will also give support to set up a market garden to provide food for the children, and a new well has already been installed to provide clean water.

Sierra Leone
The village of Kundorwahun currently has no provision for water and no sanitation. The issues this community is grappling with include water taken from polluted sources and open defecation, risking further contamination of water, resulting in widespread gastro-intestinal disease and child mortality. Our partner Use-Less is raising money through the sale of their environmentally friendly products to provide clean water for the village.

15: Massa Market
Massa, Sierra Leone Massa market is an important local market, which serves all the surrounding villages in Pejeh, Barrie and Sowa chiefdoms. We have constructed a Cassava store and processing plant next to the market. Cassava is an essential staple food in the region and by having a central store, the farmers will be able to process and distribute their crops more efficiently, giving them an enhanced livelihood and improving the economy of the whole area.

16: McGrath Primary School
Gbongay, Sierra Leone School construction isn't the main focus of our work, but funding was secured to rebuild the primary school in Gbongay. The original school was destroyed in the civil war, meaning that classes were being held either in the open or in a temporary building. The new school has ensured a quality environment and education facilities for the 200+ pupils, which will greatly improve the educational prospects for the children of the village and help to secure a more sustainable future for the whole community.

17: Pejeh Chiefdom
Pejeh, Sierra Leone From the success of the pilot project in Gbongay village, the support for ecosan toilets, wells and livelihood is being developed in all 19 villages of Pejeh Chiefdom, Pujehun district. By the time the works are complete in mid 2011, close to 11,000 men, women and children will have access to new ecosan toilets and clean drinking water. In addition, 4,400 people are being given the opportunity for a livelihood.

Sahun, Sierra LeoneLife in Sahun is a constant struggle. The village has one well, but this is located 500 metres away from the centre, meaning that a great deal of time is spent carrying water from the well to the village. The well also often fails in the dry season. They have no sanitation. We are raising funds to provide two wells with hand pumps and eight small community ecosan at different locations within the village. This will transform the wellbeing of the whole community, giving them the good health to be able to take up education and livelihood opportunities.

Shengay, Sierra Leone Shengay is a remote forest village, and has no sanitation facilities, so the villagers are using the neighbouring fields, with obvious risks to their health and security. There is also no well in the village, so all water is being drawn from a nearby stream. We are constructing a community ecosan toilet, with a central washing area. This will provide effective sanitation facilities for all 175 people in the village.

India is a country of extremes. Despite the fact that they have experienced tremendous growth as an industrialised society, at least 400 million people live on or below the poverty line. Due to a lack of adequate sanitation facilities across the country, 400 million people open defecate every day. A lot of our work in India centres on schools (most of which have inadequate sanitation facilities), communities, and women (who are often excluded in the workplace).

Chennai inner-city sanitation
Half of humanity now lives in cities and it is anticipated that within two decades nearly 60% of the world’s population will be urban dwellers.
Our mobile composting eco-sanitation units are an effective way to provide clean, safe sanitation facilities to the urban poor. They bypass issues such as a lack of sewerage systems and water supplies, and are small and light enough to easily manoeuvre into small urban streets.
