From Damn Interesting:

On November 21, 1980 an oil drilling crew punctured the top of an underground salt dome of the Blue Diamond salt mine.

A giant whirlpool formed. It swallowed another nearby drilling platform whole, as well as a barge loading dock, 70 acres of soil from Jefferson Island, trucks, trees, structures, and a parking lot. The sucking force was so strong that it reversed the flow of a 12-mile-long canal which led out to the Gulf of Mexico, and dragged 11 barges from that canal into the swirling vortex, where they disappeared into the flooded mines below.

After three hours, the lake was drained of its 3.5 billion gallons of water. The water from the canal, now flowing in from the Gulf of Mexico, formed a 150-foot waterfall into the crater where the lake had been, filling it with salty ocean water.

Within two days, what had previously been an eleven-foot-deep freshwater body was replaced with a 1,300-foot-deep saltwater lake.

(report offensive)
Midnight Hunter is a multi-service construction vessel providing saturation diving in up to 1000 feet of water. She can also be equipped with ROV equipment to perform subsea construction projects.

--

Torch Offshore also announced today that it has entered into an agreement with Cable Shipping Inc. to bareboat charter a vessel, the G. Murray, under a three-year contract. The vessel will be renamed the Midnight Hunter. The Company's Board of Directors has approved the agreement.

The Midnight Hunter will be used by the Company as a deepwater pipelay vessel as it is capable of laying pipe (utilizing four reels) and providing diving and ROV support work. The vessel is 340 feet long and 62 feet wide and is a DP-2 class vessel with accommodations for 128. The vessel will have pipelay capabilities to work in water depths of approximately 3,000 to 4,000 feet.

"The Midnight Hunter will provide Torch with an immediate deepwater presence and is an ideal fit with our strategy of taking our existing expertise into the deepwater arena. We also believe that having this vessel operating in the deepwater today will pay significant dividends in connection with the introduction of the Midnight Express in the coming year," stated Lyle Stockstill.

In order to cross the Mississippi River, while enabling large vessels to pass underneath, trains begin a long, slow climb from the near sea-level swamps of southern Louisiana, two miles away from the river itself. The structure that allows this is part of the longest railway bridge in the USA, named after, and commissioned by Mr. Long, the notorious Louisiana governor. Built in 1936, the bridge carries both automobiles and trains in and out of New Orleans. The thick sediment of the riverbed required the construction of a cement foundation extending 170 feet beneath the water and mud. Despite nearly 800 feet of horizontal clearance between the piers of its cantilever truss, it has been struck by ships several times.
