The Adventurous Trip of Vasco da Gama Vasco da Gama’s father was an explorer with the dream of going from Portugal to India. Unfortunately he died before he could make it happen. That dream that Vasco’s father had eventually will make him famous. Vasco da Gama was born in 1460 at Sines, Portugal. Both Prince John and Prince Manuel continued the efforts of Prince Henry to find a sea route to India and in 1497 Manuel placed Vasco da Gama, who already had some reputation as a warrior and navigator, in charge of four vessels built especially for the expedition. Everyone thought it was impossible to cross the Indian Ocean because everyone thought that the Indian Ocean was not connected to any other seas. Fortunately Da Gama proved it could be done. Da Gama sailed to India for spices and other goods. He ended up making a second trip to India in 1502-1503. He slayed hundreds of Muslims, often brutally in order to show his power. Vasco da Gama died from an illness in India on December 24th 1524. His body was returned to Portugal for burial. His most vital remembrance was he discovered that there was an ocean route from Portugal to the east. This opened a major trade route from Western Europe. Source: http://homepage.mac.com
