14: Implementing Community Sanctions and Measures in Algeria

Supporting the implementation of community sanctions and measures in Algeria as an alternative to Custodial Sentences.

The collaboration between the UK Ministry of Justice and the Algerian Ministry of Justice on Implementing Algerian Legislation that provides for Community Sanctions and Measures as an alternative to Custodial Sentences follows on from discussions between the two agencies initiated in 2009 where positive relationships were made and Algerian judicial officials were keen to work with the UK in a number of areas, particularly community sanctions.
Legislation had recently been introduced in Algeria enabling community sanctions and measures to be enacted. With this in mind, senior Algerian judges believed a project with the UK in this field would be beneficial to the country.
Building on the context outlined, the purpose of this project is to further the progress made to date and support the implementation of community sanctions and measures in Algeria.
