The present day St Laurence`sTraditional Orchard is the remainingfragment of the original Peacock holdingwhich was started 1920-22.
The mature standards seem to date fromthen. These being mostly Bramley withKing of Pippins as pollinator, oneunknown standard imposed because therewas a space during the war 1939-45,Pershore plums, Victoria plum, greengage, a single cox (from theoriginal cox!), and, as part of the wareffort, 6 cherries were planted alongthe northern sector of the existingorchard, where oaks replaced them in the1950`s.
It appears that barrels of windfallswere always placed outside onEastwoodbury Lane by the Peacockfamilly.

115: Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides)

Hedge planting around Saxon Lodge care home in Smith Street, Shoeburyness. Probably best to seek permission before harvesting.

Fruit - raw or cooked. Very rich in vitamin C (120mg per 100g) and vitamin A, they are too acid when raw for most peoples tastes, though most children seem to relish them. Used for making fruit juice, it is high in vitamins and has an attractive aroma. It is being increasingly used in making fruit juices, especially when mixed with other fruits, because of its reputed health benefits. The fruits of some species and cultivars (not specified) contain up to 9.2% oil. The fruit is very freely borne along the stems and is about 6 - 8mm in diameter. The fruit becomes less acid after a frost or if cooked. The fruit is ripe from late September and usually hangs on the plants all winter if not eaten by the birds. It is best used before any frosts since the taste and quality of frosted berries quickly deteriorate.

116: Gingko

Gingko tree near cafe in Priory Park.

From Wikipedia; The nut-like gametophytes inside the seeds are particularly esteemed in Asia, and are a traditional Chinese food. Ginkgo nuts are used in congee, and are often served at special occasions such as weddings and the Chinese New Year (as part of the vegetarian dish called Buddha's delight). In Chinese culture, they are believed to have health benefits; some also consider them to have aphrodisiac qualities. Japanese cooks add Ginkgo seeds (called ginnan) to dishes such as chawanmushi, and cooked seeds are often eaten along with other dishes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ginkgo_biloba
