Paharpur is a small village 5 km west of Jamalganj in the Greater Rajshahi District. The Paharpur Vihara, known as Somapura Mahavira, was built by the Pala Emperor Dharmapala (AD 770-810). With its simple, harmonious lines and its profusion of carved decoration, it influenced Buddhist architecture as far away as Cambodia.

Siddhartha Gautama, the Lord Buddha, was born in 623 B.C. in the gardens of Lumbini. The site is now being developed as a Buddhist pilgrimage centre. Lumbini is situated at the foothills of the Himalayas in modern Nepal.
A series of nine Hindu temples, as well as a Jain sanctuary, can be seen there. Three very closely located sites in the State of Karnataka provide a remarkable concentration of religious monuments dating from the great dynasty of the Chalukya . These monuments represent eclectic art.
