This map tells the story of a charity called "Send A Cow; which gives assistance to families in Africa by providing them with the practical help they need. Each placemark provides information about the projects taking place along with photos and links to further information. This type of KML is a good example of how geography can inform many more people about what an organization is doing, and where. By Robert K. Bernard

About Send A Cow

Send A Cow is a UK based Christian organisation giving direct, practical help to poor families in Africa, by providing livestock, together with training in animal care and sustainable organic farming, and low-cost veterinary services.

Our Programme in Mozambique

Mozambique is changing fast. In 1992, a peace deal ended the civil conflict that had begun in 1977: up to a million people had died through fighting or starvation. Since then, the country has had to deal with the resettlement of civil war refugees and internally displaced persons, as well as flood, famine, and AIDS.

About Our Programme in Kenya

On the surface, Kenya seems far more developed than the other countries where we work. Its capital, Nairobi, is an important commercial centre and transport hub, and is home to a large, educated middle-class. Tourists flock to Kenya on safaris to see its splendid wildlife reserves.

But about half the country's population lives on less than $1 a day. Outside Nairobi and Mombassa, subsistence farming is widespread. And in recent years, Kenya has been hit by political upheaval, drought and AIDS as well.

About Our Programme in Uganda

Send a Cow was founded in 1988 in response to a plea from a Ugandan bishop. The country had been devastated by a long civil war: people had lost their homes and cattle, and milk had become a luxury that few could afford. The bishop had heard there were milk surpluses in the UK, and appealed to British farmers for help.

About Our Programme in Rwanda

In 1994, Rwanda experienced Africa's worst genocide in modern times. An estimated 800,000 people, mainly from the Tutsi ethnic group, were killed by militias of Hutu origin in 100 days of fighting. More people, of both ethnic groups, died in refugee camps afterwards as a result of cholera and violence.

About Our Programme in Ethiopia

Ethiopia is a beautiful land, with a high central plateau surrounded by lowlands. But its fragile environment has meant it has become a byword for drought and famine. Many people are reliant on food aid from abroad, and almost 70% of the population lives on less than $1 US per day.

About Our Programme in Lesotho

The isolated Kingdom of Lesotho- surrounded on all sides by South Africa-  is breathtakingly beautiful. But life in this mountainous terrain is tough, and less than 5% of the population manages to grow enough food to eat all year round.

Many people in Lesotho are now trying to eke out a living through farming- but the country's severe climate and fragile ecology are against them. There is no rain between April and September. When the rains do come, they are sudden and heavy- but run straight off the mountainsides. That is due largely to environmental damage caused by chopping down too many trees and over-farming the land.

About Our Programme in Ghana

Send a Cow began work in Ghana, in western Africa, in 2005. The projects we help are in the Brong Ahafo region in the central part of the country, where the terrain is savannah-forest.

The agricultural land has been overfarmed, and the area has suffered deforestation. One of the causes of deforestation is that local villagers use "slash and burn" techniques: setting fire to the bush in order to clear more land for cultivation, and to harvest wild honey.

Our Programme in Cameroon

The west African country of Cameroon is sometimes described as "Africa in miniature", thanks to its huge variety of landscapes and cultures. Yet about 40 per cent of the population lives on less than $1 a day. And, as in so many countries around the world, deforestation is damaging the fragile environment.
