Phuket has hills over 500 meters above sea level (1700 feet), yet nothing is more than 10km from the sea. Little wonder the name Phuket is derived from the Malay word Bhukit which means "HILL". And there are some great views from the hills and some very nice viewpoints.

0: Big Buddha

Built on a hill over 400m above sea level, the Big Buddha statue is itself 45m high and has been under construction, very slowly, since about 2002. The main statue is complete and work continues around it. The views are GREAT!

6: Monkey Hill (Khao To Sae)

North side of Phuket Town, easy to spot - the hill with the aerials on top. Many people come to walk here in the evening or at the weekend. There's an interesting shrine halfway up the hill too. Monkeys - yes, near the top. Lots.

7: Khao Khad Viewpoint

Khao Khad is in the Cape Panwa area of Phuket south of Phuket Town, 360 degree view from a view tower that has a big car park and hardly any visitors. Shame! Great views!

8: Cape Panwa

I love the views from along this road down the west side of Cape Panwa. Very quiet road, views across Chalong Bay.

9: Radar Hill

Everyone who visits Phuket have seen the hill with the ball on top - a military radar installation. Very few have driven up there. Views all the way. People think it's the highest hill in Phuket - not quite, but it's over 500m above sea level and IS the highest road in Phuket.

10: Rang Hill

Rang Hill (Khao Rang) is located on the north side of Phuket town and is a popular gathering place in the evenings and a fairly commonly visited viewpoint, on the itineraries of tours. There's a well known cafe (Tunk Ka Cafe) on the top, which does food and great iced coffee.

On Rang Hill, a restaurant that has been here "for ever" with views over part of Phuket Town, great for a sunset/evening meal.

I did a hike up here, not many people have ... I was led by Glenn who is a marathon running, hill walking, outdoor dude! For me - hard work - but reached over 540m above sea level.

I followed a track next to the shrine on the hill between Patong and Phuket Town. Great views over Patong and the other way over Kathu district.
