People call Rodney a 'ghost town' but people still live there and there are several hunting camps around too. We went once and must have seen 15 deer. The Rodney Presbyterian Church still has a cannon ball lodged in the facade.
The "lady in red" from Egypt Plantation is buried here with a simple flat monument. ("The method of preservation used for the Lady In Red was common prior
to the Civil War, when custom-made caskets, shaped to the body, were
ordered as one would order a dress.
"The glass that sealed the coffin was placed over the body, and alcohol
was poured inside until it was level full, and then sealed with a
castiron tip.
"When the back hoe machine hit the coffin, alcohol spilled from the
casket and spots of the liquid were seen on the folds of the woman's
dress." )

Beautiful. Also, place where Henry Vick was buried at midnight after he was killed in a duel in Mobile.
His body came off the boat in Vicksburg at noon, then came the 50 miles here, arrived at midnight. "Men were stationed with lighted torches along the driveway and in the vicinity of the grave to provide light for the funeral...Vick's casket was packed in charcoal and coffee...The box in which the casket was packed was very large. As my grandmother said, it was like a 'piano box.' Because of the size of the box, the body was not taken into the Chapel. Services were held at graveside." by Hugh Thompson II in 'Must See Mississippi'.

"Site of an antebellum spa and hotel. The hotel burned in 1938, but the mineral water springs that made it famous remain. Today it is used as a recreation area providing modern campsites, shelters, tables and grills for daytime and nighttime family outings. The Bladon Springs Community still has several historic homes and churches."

"temple-style Greek Revival
architecture, was built around 1840"
"organizational base for Voting Rights demonstrations led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and served as the starting place for the Selma to Montgomery
marches of March 1965. A National Historic Landmark, the Chapel remains an active church. The Chapel and its monument to Dr. King can be viewed from
outside. The Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail / All American Road begins at this historic church."
"Dr. William J. Edwards, a graduate
of Tuskegee University, founded this school in
1893. Known as the Colored Literary and Industrial
School, it opened as a one-room log cabin
with three students. At its peak, Snow Hill Institute
included 27 buildings, a staff of 35 and over 400
students. It operated as a private school for African-American children until Dr. Edwards’ retirement in 1924,
when it became a public school until desegregation forced its closing in 1973."
Old homes, look for "Wakefield,
a 6,000-square-foot Steamboat Gothic
building built in the 1830s or ’40s." "The 1840s
Purifoy-Lee-McCoy Home, known as
“Patience Plantation” was built in simple
Federal style, with Greek Revival elements.
Bethsaida Baptist Church was founded in
1831, and the present church erected between
1858 and 1860. It contains a slave gallery,
along with a separate slave entrance."
Many historic homes here. Find:
Rosewood: Continue north through
Lowndesboro on County Road 97 approx.
1 mile to Browns Hill Road. Turn right and
travel 0.5 miles. The house is visible at end
of long lane on right.
Steelehaven: On north side of US 80,
about 2 miles east of Lowndesboro.
Hank Williams is buried here (not hard to find at all, tall-ish monument, fake green grass carpet at monument).
They also do tours. This is the church that MLK was senior pastor at.
In the capitol building. A wonderful shop with Alabama craftspeople's work on the right-hand side of the room. Don't miss.
There is an interpretive center here, next door is the church parsonage where MLK lived. 303 S. Jackson Street Montgomery, AL 36104
Also a memorial center to walk through here.
Booker T. Washington's home, also a museum.
"Little Texas Tabernacle and Campground. The facility
has been the site of camp meetings since the 1850s. Camp meetings were held in October, following the agricultural
harvest. Meeting attendees stayed in small wooden cabins, camped in tents, or stayed in the open air.
During the meetings, they were governed by rules adopted and enforced by religious leaders. The Little Texas
Tabernacle structure is remarkable, constructed of huge, hand-hewn beams held together with pegs. It appears
as solid today as when it was built. Camp meetings are still held at the site during the fourth week of July each
year. No public camping is permitted at this site."
"In 1914, this small, two-room frame schoolhouse opened for African-American children.
This was one of the original six Rosenwald Schools—eventually, there would be more than five thousand
of them across the South. These schools were the result of the vision and effort of Julius Rosenwald,
Dr. Booker T. Washington, and C.J. Calloway, as well as the tenacity of many “ordinary” citizens.
Mr. Rosenwald provided matching funds for the construction of these schools, designed primarily for
rural, black children. By 1920, administration for the Rosenwald Schools had grown so large that it
relocated from Tuskegee Institute to a central office in Nashville, Tennessee.
The Shiloh Rosenwald Elementary School served several generations of Macon County residents. Some
of the unwitting participants in the infamous Tuskegee Syphilis Study were picked up by bus at the corner
near this school. Some are buried in the cemetery just down the road. Charlie Pollard was the first to
sue the government over the study and is buried in the Shiloh Cemetery. The Shiloh Missionary Baptist
Church next door to the school continues to serve the community."
This is weird, but they have what people actually call a "double boob" counter. If you go there & look at how the counter is shaped...anyway... Who thinks of such things? Why am I even writing this? Get the pork.
Good place to stop on the interstate...also get pecans.
Julia Tutwiler is buried at the church cemetery.
To find it, travel
north on Knox and enter the cemetery at the
second gate. Drive as far as possible toward
the far side of the cemetery and then walk
down the slope to the graves near the fence.
Parker is buried there with other members of
his family. There is no indication on the stone
that it was ever a monument to John Wilkes
Booth.
The 50-acre site includes a dogtrot log house built around 1818, a circa 1830 Federal-style house, the 1880s Wheeler house, eight farm-related outbuildings, two family cemeteries, an African-American cemetery, a small Indian mound, a pond, a boxwood garden, and other garden areas.
Weird, weird, weird: there is a statue of James Marion Sims who is considered the father of modern gynecology on the lawn at the capitol building. Look him up on wiki.
Somewhere here around Collbran, between Collinsville and Ft Payne on Hwy 11
Look for monument of couple and child on crutches.
White Cliffs at Epes Epes, AL 35460
