Teaching always 'just made sense'. My mom asked me what I wanted to do when I was in Junior High and, while I had never really put much thought to it, the answer was easy. 'I want to teach.'

I actually decided to teach when I was six years old, but I made the decision to pursue my certification while I was serving as the Technology Facilitator for a school district. At the age of 23, I embarked on my journey to pursue my master's degree, and the rest is history (or rather now in the present). :-)

From Laurel, MS to Irving, TX...I'm on a mission....

Ann arbor, or A2 to most, is where I found my passion for teaching. I spent most of my childhood and early adult life here as well. While growing up,

I always wanted to be a writer and actress. I got a BA in Creative Writing with a minor in Theater, Spanish and Journalism and signed up for graduate school at University of Dallas. I was friends with some professors at UT Arlington and to lure me away for University of Dallas, they offered to pay me to teach while I was attending grad school. It was an offer I could not refuse. That was my first venture into teaching, which I had never planned on or wanted to do. This year will be my 8th year in education. Life sometimes picks our paths for us, even when we think we know what is best.

When I was at UNT, I was determined to be an accounting major. However, after a year, it didn't really excite me. I was making A's, but it wasn't really enough. I worked one summer at the Child Development Center, and realized that I wanted to teach kids. It was meant to be because my parents remember me playing school out in the garage and tutoring all my friends through school.

I started out in Biochemistry, but it just wasn't me. I loved Math and French, and the only way to combine them was in two secondary teaching fields.

I never wanted to be a teacher growing up. My mom, 2 grandparents, 4 aunts, 1 uncle, and 2 of my older brothers and sisters had been teachers or had worked in schools, so I always said I would never do it. I was also a huge bookworm growing up, so I decided I wanted to work in publishing. In my last semester of undergrad, I won a scholarship and had to use all the money that semester towards tuition, and I only needed 2 credits, so I signed up for all the teacher certification classes. That spring, I started to sub, and the next school year I was offered a job. 5 years later, I started my master's degree in Library Science, and now I get to teach, be around books, AND work in publishing (on the buying and reviewing side).

I changed my career choice after being in marketing and not feeling motivated or challenged. I decided to start substituting and after my first day I knew I had found what I wanted to do when I grew up. I applied for my alternative certification and moved back to my hometown in Irving. It was important to me to teach in the district that I gained my educational journey and give back to my community.
