Gyeonghuigung Palace is one of the "Five Grand Palaces" of Korea's Joseon Dynasty. It's my understanding that Gyeonghuigung Palace wasn't actually a palace, but a royal villa. Construction occured between 1617-23, and once upon a time, the entire complex comprised some 100 different structures. A rendering of the compound circa 1820 shows an elaborate and extensive series of walls, homes and gardens. Sadly, virtually the entire palace was razed by the Japanese during their colonial occupation of Korea (1910-1945).

Still, it's one of the best places in Seoul to see a slice of old Seoul.

This archetypal tuff cone was formed by hydrovolcanic eruptions about 5,000 years ago. Today, the 182-meter cone forms a conspicuous peninsula on Jeju Island's eastern coast. The volcanic cone is 600 meters wide and 990 meters tall. Its crater is lined with 99 spires that resemble a crown or castle walls.

Sungnyemun, better known as Namdaemun (Great South Gate) was one of four main gates that allowed access into the fortress city built by King Taejo in 1392. Tragically, the gate was destroyed by an arsonist in 2007 and is currently undergoing restoration.

157: Boshingak Bell Pavilion

Boshingak (???) is a large bell pavilion located at the Jonggak Intersection of Jongno, a major thoroughfare in central Seoul that bears its name ("Jongno" literally means Bell Street). Originally constructed in 1396 and moved to its current location in 1440, the bell was rung to announce the time and to signal the opening and closing of the city's fortress gates or in the event of fire. The structure has been destroyed several times by war and fire.

A bell-ringing ceremony occurs daily (except Mondays) year-round from 11:30-12:30.

The Express Bus Terminal is located above subway lines 3, 7 and 9 (opening July 2009) and offers buses that go virtually anywhere in South Korea. (Note: it should not be confused with the Nambu Bus Terminal, which is located just two stops southward on subway line 3.). The next door Central City Terminal is also a bus hub.

The terminal is also famous for the huge underground shopping mall located... well, underneath the terminal.

The Gangnam Underground Shopping Arcade (??????) is located beneath the Express Bus Terminal in Seoul’s Seocho District. If you use exit #8, you’ll come upon the Arcade: side-by-side shopping aisles stretching almost a kilometer offering some 120,000 square meters of merchandise.

Among the most popular Han River park is the Banpo (???? - ??) section. Located between the Banpo and Hannam bridges on the river’s south bank, the park was recently redone, with much of the natural vegetation removed in favor of expansive lawns, walking and bicycle trails, and a large play area for children. An inline skating rink and outdoor stages were also incorporated into the new design. This being a riverside park, jet skis vy with water taxis and river cruise boats for primacy on the water.

Seoul's newest landmark is a public plaza that extends some 19,000 square meters in the middle of busy Sejong Boulevard. Located in front of Gyeongbok Palace's main Gwanghwamun Gate, the plaza features a "flower carpet" of 120,000 flowers, a water fountain, and an underground gallery called the Haechi Madang.

Mt. Gwanaksan (???) is home to several Buddhist sites, namely Yeonjuam and its favorite hermitage,Yeonjudae (???). Founded in 677 during the reign of the Silla Dynasty King Munmu (???), it was renamed by Goryeo loyalists who fled here after the Joseon Dynasty toppled Goryeo in 1392. According to lore, the site seemed fitting since Yeonjudae's dramatic perch faces northward toward the old Goryeo capital of Gaeseong (now part of North Korea).

Mt. Gwanaksan (???) is located on Seoul's southern tip, straddling the Geumcheon and Gwanak districts and the Gyeonggi Province suburb of Gwacheon. Designated a city park back in 1968, the area is probably best known as the home to Korea's most famous institute of higher ed., Seoul National University. SNU's campus is cradled between two mountain ridges, and is the most popular starting point for hikers.

Among the six parks connected with the World Cup Park complex is Haneul Park (????). Haneul means “sky” in Korean, and this park alone covers some 192,000 square meters. A blue arched bridge connects the stadium area to a zigzagging staircase. From the top, you can see fantastic views of Bukhan, Gwanak and Nam mountains and the Han River. Some 85 different varieties of plants and wildflowers grow in Haneul Park, although the vast plateau is famous for its hectares of cogon grass and eulalia. Each October when Seoul’s skies are especially blue and the reeds turn a golden hue, the park hosts a popular festival.

Cheonchuksa is one of Dobongsan’s two major Buddhist temples. It’s a popular spot among hikers to chat, enjoy some delicious cinnamon tea and enjoy the temple’s simple lunch offering. At the entrance are several rows of standing iron Buddhas. Keep walking and you’re rewarded with a great photo-op of the main prayer hall beneath Jaoonbong. From each roof tile hanged a long ice dagger.

Yeouido Island fits snugly against the Hangang River’s southern bank; in fact, only a narrow stream separates it from the mainland. But these wetlands, known as the Saetgang Ecological Park, create an attractive setting. Large willow trees and reeds camouflage various fish, fowl and even rabbits. Under construction is an ultra-modern, 354-meter footbridge that will cross the marsh and connect the island’s growing number of skyscrapers to Yeongdeungpo.

For a very reasonable 9,000 won (or under $7), the phenomenal “Potato Omelet Plate,” which includes three very fluffy eggs filled with spinach, tomatoes, bacon, cheese and, of course, potatoes, can be yours. It doesn’t sound remarkable, but it is. The waffles were also excellent, and I’m eager to sample their dinner fare.

Founded in 1885 by American Presbyterian missionaries, the prestigious school’s campus includes an attractive quad of ivy-clad, Collegiate-Gothic buildings as well as the top-ranked Severance Hospital. Each year, a sports festival with arch-rival Korea University covers Sinchon’s streets in Yonsei Blue.

Changuimun (???) is the oldest of Seoul Fortress’s four small gates. Built of granite and wood in 1396 when Seoul was established as the capital of the Joseon Dynasty, the current gatehouse dates to 1740. The gate marks the southern entrance to the peaceful neighborhood of Buam-dong.
