19: CLC Community Garden

Garden Name:
CLC Community Garden (we may see if people have thoughts for a catchier title next year, but this works for now)

Garden Location:
College of Lake County campus (behind the Horticulture building) in Grayslake, IL; we’re located along the eastern edge of campus just off Route 45 south of Washington Street.

Garden Type:
Vegetables, Allotments – All plots for folks to “rent” primarily for vegetables, but many people add in a few flowers and herbs; we also have some borders of dwarf fruit trees and berry bushes along the perimeter of the garden.

Looking for volunteers?
Yes, we are looking for volunteers – We could use some folks to tend our compost area.

Are allotments available?
Yes, we may have member openings or available allotments – We’re taking requests for next year’s plots to assess if we need to expand; we had 38 plots this year, and several folks rented double plots while other shared a plot; we hope to expand to 48 plots next season.

Contact Info:
• Organization: College of Lake County, Horticulture Dept.
o Garden leader’s phone: 847-543-2320
o garden email: Care of Rory Klick – rklick@clcillinois.edu
o Leave a note at our garden in the mail box or on the kiosk. (gardeners can leave messages on the garden gate as needed)
o Come to a garden work day.
• Usual work days: Our garden is open during daylight hours, so people come by whenever it works for their schedule – before/after work, at the lunch hour and/or on weekends. Parking is available nearby, maybe 100’ from the garden.

Additional notes:
Our plots are 10’ by 20’, and this year we charged $15 but will be increasing our fee for 2010 to $20/plot. The garden is tilled and composted so it’s ready to plant, and we have fencing to keep out the deer/rabbits, although it is not locked. We have water available for the gardeners, but they are responsible for watering and maintaining their own plots, and we provide compost bins for their weeds. Gardeners provide their own seeds or plants to start, although we generally have a few extra vegetable seedlings left over from our May plant sale that we make available. Extra produce is accepted for donation to local pantries or our own college Women’s Center. We tried to do a “weed and feed” gathering every other week one evening, but not many people came by – maybe next year!

ADDITIONAL INFO:

The Peterson Garden Project is an organic, community vegetable garden on the southwest corner of Peterson and Campbell in Chicago’s 40th Ward. Supported by Alderman Patrick O’Connor, and made possible by Asian Human Services’ donating use of the land, Chicago neighbors are once again able to garden on this historic strip of Peterson Avenue. The site was part of an original WW2 Victory Garden from 1942-1945, and was re-launched for Chicago residents who, like those gardeners almost 70 years ago, want to work with their neighbors to grow their own food. Join The Peterson Garden Project for an adventure in community gardening – retro style!

Any other garden info:

Workdays are generally Sundays from 10am-2pm
Youth Days are Fridays from 3-6pm (from 4/9-6/18/2010)

We are a group of gardeners who have started a vegetable garden in a formerly empty lot at the corner of Cullerton and Laflin in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. We are looking to expand our group by connecting with the community in order to grow our membership, grow more locally produced food, and to plant the seed of community gardening in Pilsen. Our mission is to provide education and awareness about the need for local sustainable food systems; to provide healthy organic produce for the community; and to provide a safe, green space in an otherwise environmentally unsound area.

Our goals for this season are…

-To create a fully functional, fully supplied small scale agriculture site for the 2010 growing season
-To grow enough food to supply the Pilsen Wellness Center with fresh produce for their clients
-To hold monthly community harvests for neighbors on the block
-To share our knowledge of growing, harvesting, and cooking fresh food with those in the community through on site learning, workshops, and labor exchange

vegetable and ornamental garden
Looking for volunteers/members?: Yes!
Contact:  mindfullivingchicago@gmail.com or visit our blog to learn about upcoming work days (mindfullivingchicago.blogspot.com). yes, we're always looking for more volunteers!
More: Mindful Living is an open community garden- instead of selling shares, we're an educational space that doubles as a classroom in the summer, and as a marketplace during the harvest season.  We're making some big additions this year-- Chicago GreenCorps is helping us build a hoop house for early spring planting and a shed to house our garden tools.  We are still looking for volunteers to help design and build these structures (especially DESIGN!), as the groundbreaking will be this spring!

Once the planting season has begun in the spring, we will also begin meeting weekly to plant, weed, compost, fertilize, and harvest. These work days coincide with educational workshops for neighborhood children and is open to any volunteers.  Topics covered include organic gardening, recycling, nutrition, cooking, art, yoga, and more.  Workday hours will be posted on our website at mindfullivingchicago.blogspot.com.
