Green pins = top/unmissable destinations for good beer; Pink markers = locations that offer reasonable beer selections on a consistent basis. They are very good places to visit; Blue markers = perfectly acceptable pubs/bars, with some nice features and guaranteed to carry some ales/continental taps, (irrespective of how unadventurous they may be); Red beds = chain pubs, with all the good and bad that comes from being predictable; Yellow dollars = trendy/posh venues, which manage to carry at least a smattering of beer choice; Warning signs = places that have been good, but which may be on the slide. Approach with caution; Orange suns = places I need to check properly, before writing up, but which appear to have some merit (beer).UPDATED NOVEMBER 2011

Lugares de interés (POIs) del Mapa

0: The Wellington

The principal beer destination in Brum, with 15 handpulled ales and a few ciders and bottles. Centrally located and absolutely unmissable.

Más sobre The Wellington

1: Anchor Inn

The original scoopers paradise, which keeps it's standards high. Lots of very nice real ales, which rotate at high speed, and some bottle choices from Belgium. Lovely pub, very possibly the best in Brum.

Más sobre Anchor Inn

2: The Bartons Arms

Superb, beautiful pub, which was restored around 2004 with tender-loving care. Another bonus is that it is owned by Oakhams, which means that the range of beers is of the highest quality and kept in beautiful condition. A must see.

Más sobre The Bartons Arms

3: The Black Eagle

Homely and very welcoming pub a short Metro ride from Snow Hill. Beautifully served guest ales and a pub full of characters. Has been doing the business for years. Marvellous.

Más sobre The Black Eagle

4: Stirchley Wines & Spirits

Comfortably the best off licence in the West Midlands, with a massive range of bottled beers, including UK real ale and craft breweries, plus new and old names from US, Germany, Belgium, plus now Norway, Italy and many more. Sensational.

Más sobre Stirchley Wines & Spirits

5: Old Contemptibles

Nicely refurbed old skool pub, with beautiful decor and a nice range of real ales. Close to Snow Hill and well worth a visit.

Más sobre Old Contemptibles

6: The Lamp Tavern

Small and snug pub, tucked incongrously into an industrial area, round the back of Digbeth. A lovely little treasure with a fistful of guest ales.

Más sobre The Lamp Tavern

7: The Brown Lion

Brewery tap for Birmingham's Two Towers microbrewery. Has several Two Towers beers always on, as you would expect, plus a couple of guests and a range of reasonably priced bottles. Interior is currently a bit sparse, but will probably become more homely.

Más sobre The Brown Lion

8: White Horse, Harborne

A local boozer, just off the high street, with around 10 guest beers. Traditional atmos, but some reliable beer offerings.

Más sobre White Horse, Harborne

9: The Red Lion (Jewellery Qtr)

Sister pub to the Lord Clifden, with a small, but nice assortment of mainly local guest beers. Usually has Bathams.

Más sobre The Red Lion (Jewellery Qtr)

10: The Shakespeare - Lower Temple

A Nicholsons pub, not to be confused with the other city centre pub called the Shakespeare, which is also run by Nicholsons. This is very nicely located, with a beautiful interior and around 6 guest ales.

Más sobre The Shakespeare - Lower Temple

11: The Shakespeare - Summer Row

Old pub, beautifully restored and modernised, with multiple rooms. Small range of handpulls, from Nicholsons guest range. Very nice.

Más sobre The Shakespeare - Summer Row

12: Prince Of Wales

Reliable Moseley boozer, with traditonal multi-roomed layout and extensive beer garden set-up. Now carries a widening range of guest ales. Well worth a visit.

Más sobre Prince Of Wales

13: The Plough

Old style pub, turned into a welcoming, modern venue. Cakes and pies sit on the bar temptingly, along with a couple of guest ales on handpump. Very pleasant and family friendly.

Más sobre The Plough

14: Bacchus Bar

Quirky Nicholsons pub, underneath the Burlington Hotel. Basically a theme bar, styled after a medieval castle - very nicely done. A couple of ales on.

Más sobre Bacchus Bar

15: The Lord Clifden

Nicely refurbed boozer, with a lovely beer garden, ping pong table, modern art and a few nice ales.

Más sobre The Lord Clifden

16: Old Joint Stock

Massive and lovely looking Fullers pub, with their range of reliable beers on tap. Very nice.

Más sobre Old Joint Stock

17: The Junction

Very nice gastropub/bar, with posh interior and furnishings. Good beer selection, with at least 3 ales on handpump and a few good taps, such as Blue Moon and Urquell. Very good place.

Más sobre The Junction

18: The Drop Forge

Lovely converted industrial unit, with split level and modern fittings. Looks a bit geared towards eating, but has 4 ales on handpull. Very good.

Más sobre The Drop Forge

19: The White Swan (Digbeth)

Beautiful, unspoilt pub, up the road from the Anchor. Carries a small range of real ales, including offerings from Jennings. Nice interiors and exterior facade.

Más sobre The White Swan (Digbeth)

20: Prince Of Wales (ICC)

Traditional boozer behind the ICC, featuring a couple of nice guest ales.

Más sobre Prince Of Wales (ICC)

21: The Old Moseley Arms

Homely, locals pub, on the Moseley/Balsall Heath border. Always 2 or 3 nice ales on, usually including Kinver or Bathams. Cheap food and welcoming atmos. Seasonal beer festivals too.

Más sobre The Old Moseley Arms

22: The Old Fox

Nice enough traditional boozer, with theatrical pretensions. A couple of guest ales make this worth a flying visit en route to the Lamp Tavern.

Más sobre The Old Fox

23: The Spotted Dog

Genuine old Irish boozer, with a homely, backstreet feel. A couple of ales available. Charming in it's own, unforced way.

Más sobre The Spotted Dog

24: The Red Lion (Shirley)

Más sobre The Red Lion (Shirley)

25: Canalside Cafe

Tiny canalside cafe (duh), very close to the Tap and Spile, just off Broad Street. A couple of ales on, and usually a Sadlers presence.

Más sobre Canalside Cafe

26: The Bull

Charming, unspoilt backstreet boozer, close to Aston University. Beautiful old interior and and a couple of real ale choices. Worth seeking out.

Más sobre The Bull

27: Global Wines

Large off licence in Bearwood, with a gratifying range of bottled real ales, including many local ones.

Más sobre Global Wines

28: Queens Arms

Sensitively smartened local boozer. Maintains it's old charm, but without any particularly noteworthy features. A couple of ales and a few bottled beers, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Más sobre Queens Arms

29: The British Oak

Big Stirchley pub, which is architecturally imprsssive, with a large, pleasant beer garden. A few ale choices and the food is very nice, well it certainbly used to be. Don't be put off by blokes looking grumpy in the front bar.

Más sobre The British Oak

30: The Church Inn

Reliable old local, which famously used to serve the Honey Monster Grill. Now sensitively tidied up, with a couple of reasonably tasty ales on handpull, although not very adventurous. Up the road from the Lord Clifden.

Más sobre The Church Inn

31: Rose Villa

Beautiful old pub, with lovely interior. Recently refurbed by the team behind the Jekyll and Hyde.

Más sobre Rose Villa

32: Edmund's

Formerly the Hogshead, then the Corner House. Now a smart brasserie/winey type place. Carries a few ales, usually including Purity and a guest. Perfectly pleasant.

Más sobre Edmund's

33: Bennetts

Massive place, which reminds me of a 1980's wine bar, complete with large renaissance style mural. A couple of reasonably chosen macro handpulls and a walk to the toilets that feels like about 2 miles.

Más sobre Bennetts

34: The Sunflower Lounge

Nice vibe, good music and a few reasonable keg lagers. Very pleasant.

Más sobre The Sunflower Lounge

35: The Old Royal

A small number of macro ales and a couple of reasonable bottles. Genuine pub with locals and atmosphere to match. Comparatively cheap.

Más sobre The Old Royal

36: Ropewalk

Large, clean pub, slap-bang on St Paul's Square. A bit sterile, but comfy, with a couple of achingly reasonable but unexciting ale choices.

Más sobre Ropewalk

37: Tap & Spile

Nice enough pub, as close to genuine as Broad Street gets. A couple of ales on, but very well known brands.

Más sobre Tap & Spile

38: Hennessey's Digbeth

Formerly rough and ready, now tarted right up and attracting a slightly more savoury crowd. Does have some ales on handpull.

Más sobre Hennessey's Digbeth

39: Jekyll & Hyde

Nice smart decor, posesses a gin parlour upstairs. More of a cocktail bar than a beer pub and staff spend most of their time flipping mixers about like they're Tom Cruise.

Más sobre Jekyll & Hyde

40: The Jewellers Arms

First and foremost, a lovely pub, with classic late 80's/early 90's fittings. A locals type feel, with 2 rooms and comfy furnishings. Only 1 ale on though, which was disappointing, although it was coupled with a couple of local keg ales.

Más sobre The Jewellers Arms

41: Square Peg

Long-barred Wetherspoons, with some questionable clientele erm, but a few pumps.

Más sobre Square Peg

42: The Figure Of Eight

Broad Street Wetherspoons, with a reasonable number of handpulls.

Más sobre The Figure Of Eight

43: Wetherspoons

Under the Central Library, now with a new ceiling. Around 6 guest ales.

Más sobre Wetherspoons

44: The Briar Rose

City Centre Wetherspoons, with quite a few handpulls.

Más sobre The Briar Rose

45: Solomon Cutler

Another Broad Street Wetherspoons, aka Lloyds No.1. A couple of guest ales feature here.

Más sobre Solomon Cutler

46: The Dragon Inn

Blandish Wetherspoons in the Chinese Quarter, on Hurst Street. Next to the Old Fox.

Más sobre The Dragon Inn

47: All Bar One - Newhall Street

Very pleasant interior - light and airy with a long, thin layout. A small range of nice keg beers, such as Rothaus. Rammed with suits, but I like this place.

Más sobre All Bar One - Newhall Street

48: All Bar One - Brindley Place

Nice food. Waterfront location, opposite the ICC. Some reliable though widely available keg choices.

Más sobre All Bar One - Brindley Place

49: Elizabeth of York

Wetherspoons in Moseley, with some ales on handpump, blah, blah.

Más sobre Elizabeth of York

50: The Covered Wagon

Ember Inn at the back of Moseley, on the Yardley Wood Road. Neat, tidy and has a couple of ales on, but nothing out of the ordinary.

Más sobre The Covered Wagon

51: The Bulls Head

Ember Inn on the Stratford Road in Hall Green. Bog standard ale and food choices.

Más sobre The Bulls Head

52: The Selly Park Tavern

Big Ember Inn, next to the excellent Royal Watan restaurant. Usual small range of well known and unadventurous ales.

Más sobre The Selly Park Tavern

53: Penny Blacks

Large bar in trendy Mailbox. Mostly a wine/lager/spirits/foodie type place, but with about 6 hand pulled ales.

Más sobre Penny Blacks

54: The Victoria

Tarted up old skool boozer, reborn as a hipster hangout. Several locallish real ales and nice decor.

Más sobre The Victoria

55: The Fighting Cocks

Trendy pub in trendy Moseley. On my last visit, it had a few nice beer choices on draught. Lovely decor too.

Más sobre The Fighting Cocks

56: The Rainbow

An old skool local boozer, long since turned into a hipster hangout. Nice interior and furnishings. Pedestrian range of beers.

Más sobre The Rainbow

57: Hare & Hounds

Trendy Moseleyesque venue transplanted just up the road. Small range of well known beers and eclectic furnishings. Hosts a range of cultural events.

Más sobre Hare & Hounds

58: Pub du Vin

Homely, yet swanky bar, beneath trendy Hotel du Vin. A few handpulls, usually including Kinver.

Más sobre Pub du Vin

59: White Swan

A large pub, refurbed in a modern, pine furnished style. A bit trendy, but not over the top. Has a few reasonable continental taps and at least a couple of standard ales.

Más sobre White Swan

60: Vertu Bar

Smart bar, pricey, and they often tend to rent it out of a Saturday for private parties so always a chance you won't be allowed in. Mostly lagery, but with the odd ale.

Más sobre Vertu Bar

61: Rai Wines

Off licence which has previously showed a bit of promise in stocking a few Belgian and German beers and some reasoable UK products. Current range unknown.

Más sobre Rai Wines

62: City Tavern

Formerly a beautiful victorian pub, then tastefully rescued by Highgate Brewery. Used to be reasonably reliable for a couple of nice ales, but I'm hearing news that it's on the turn.

Más sobre City Tavern

63: The Craven Arms

Reasonably unspoilt old boozer, near the Mailbox. Only a couple of ales, and pretty generic ones at that.

Más sobre The Craven Arms

64: The Actress & Bishop

Lively disco/live music venue by night, but does serve some ales, however...... quality of beer is highly variable and has led to pints being sent back.
