Red lentil soup (mercimek corbasi, with carrots, tomato, and crushed red pepper) is the thing to try here. Adana kebab is very salty. Note to cabbies: this restaurant gives drivers a discount.

1: Adana Grill Haus

Adana kebab (9 euros) is flavorful but can be dry here. Lamb chops (kuzu pirzola, 12 euros) are perfect: juicy, pink, and cooked to the point where the fat melts through the meat. Order them with a side of yogurt and acili ezme (spicy tomato and eggplant relish).

2: Kaese Koenig

An East German cafeteria in the shadow of the TV tower on Alexanderplatz where you can find dead grandma (blood sausage mixed with liverwurst, served with sauerkraut and boiled potatoes, 4.50 euros) and other local classics for cheap.

3: Hamy Café-Foodstore Vietnamesische Speisen

Gorgeous kaffir lime and basil-seasoned Vietnamese curry (4.90 euros). Skip the pho and try the ginger tea.

4: Sen Viet

Lovely 4.90 euro bowls of Vietnamese curry that pack a quadruple punch of sweet, sour, spicy and salty. Though the cooks rein in the chili peppers for the German palate, lemongrass is everywhere, and the combination of fresh cabbage and cilantro with tender pieces of chicken in warm peanut and coconut milk sauce is layered and vibrant and delicious.

5: La Bandida

The steak is good - so juicy it drips – but nothing like what you’d get in a Buenos Aires parrilla, even though this place claims to be an Argentine-Mexican restaurant. Kidney beans are delicious here: sautéed with speck, caramelized onions and jalapeño peppers, they're smoky, spicy, and perfect with 180 grams of entrecote.

6: Konyali

4 euro Turkish pizza. Thin-crusted, chewy and heat-blistered, it reminds me of a New York slice on the bottom. But the top half is all Konya: minced, rare beef seasoned with thyme and sprinkled with flat-leaf parsley. Simple and brick-oven delicious.

7: Hasir

Almost all the kebabs are great here, and the kunefe (shredded filo, honey and butter sandwiched around Turkish cheese) is some of the best in Berlin. There's a reason so many Turkish cab drivers recommend this place. PS - Their ayran is excellent.

8: Gel Gör Inegöl Köfteci

Kofte (veal sausage made in house) on toasted French bread, topped with red chili sauce, sumac, tomatoes, arugula and a squeeze of lemon is 5 euros of perfection. They also make some of the best kunefe in Berlin.

9: Trattoria a’Muntagnola

House-made pastas. Sage and butter-covered strangolapreti (12.50 Euros) are outstanding here. Made with potatoes, spinach and ricotta and sprinkled with pecorino cheese, they could double as gnocchi, but they'e stuffed with raisins and pine nuts and so go beyond the deliciousness of gnocchi.

11: La Vigna Italienische Weine u. Spezialitäten

The food at this little Italian restaurant is ho-hum, but they serve some of the very best espresso in Berlin. Close your eyes - it's almost like tasting a caffe macchiato in Rome. This is cabbie Zille Quitmann's favorite coffee spot in the west.

Más sobre La Vigna Italienische Weine u. Spezialitäten

12: Nil sudanesischer Imbiss

Good, cheap (3.50 euro) Sudanese falafel with fresh lettuce and tomato and peanut sauce. They also serve tofu and fried cheese sandwiches - perfect for vegetarians or anyone trying to fill up on something healthy for less than 5 euros.

Más sobre Nil sudanesischer Imbiss

13: Café Fleury Cafés

A little bit of Paris in Prenzlauer Berg. Their chocolate cake is great - so are the outside tables when it's warm. They also sell beautiful jars of jam and pate from France.

14: Tandur Brot Lasan

Bread straight from the tandoori oven. You can buy bags to go and/or get a fresh slab with sesame seeds and sheep's milk cheese for 1 euro.

15: Move Bar

The most unpretentious neighborhood bar - one of my favorite places in the west to get a beer (the bartenders have mastered the art of foam). Antique signs, blonde wood paneling. A favorite of writers - there's a glass case in the front with all of the books that have been written on the premises.

16: Die Feinbäckerei

Spectacular spaetzle plus other Swabian specialties. Get the spaetzle with mushrooms and cream sauce and fresh flat leaf parsley. Simple and delicious and 8 euros.

Más sobre Die Feinbäckerei

17: CLOSED - Biladi Sudanesiche Spezialitaeten

Wonderful foul (fava beans) and Sudanese falafel. Get the 5-euro platter with falafel and foul - it comes with hummus, green salad, fried potatoes, and plenty of peanut sauce. Everything is fresh and fried to order.

Biladi Sudanesiche Spezialitaeten
Proskauer Straße 30
10247 Berlin, Germany

Más sobre CLOSED - Biladi Sudanesiche Spezialitaeten

18: Dachgarten Restaurant

Skip the cakes and the food altogether. The reason to go here is to avoid the line going up to the glass roof of the Reichstag (which can take an hour or more).

If you make a reservation for tea at Dachgarten, your name goes on a list, you show up at 3pm, go to the handicapped entrance on the south side of the Reichstag and take the elevator straight to the roof. You can have coffee or tea at the restaurant and make a beeline for the 360-degree view afterwards.

Platz der Republik

Más sobre Dachgarten Restaurant

19: Kimchi Princess GmbH

Korean food is starting to get more popular in Berlin, and this is a pretty good spot if you're desperate for bulgogi. Their scallion pancake is excellent, too.

Más sobre Kimchi Princess GmbH

20: Rogacki

The deli to end all delis. Pork in hundreds of incarnations - salami, proscuitto, pate, head cheese and more. Apple liverwurst is spectacular. Fried fish from the cafeteria is perfect. So is the butterfish from the smoked fish counter. Get goodies from every counter and spread out your bounty picnic-style at the tables in the center. The only thing that's forgettable here might be the potato salad. I tried 4 kinds and none of them could compare to my grandma's.

Más sobre Rogacki

21: Sala Thai

Taxi Berlin's favorite place in Friedrichshain for Thai - especially red curry with coconut milk and chicken. The restaurant is inside an office complex on the ground floor to the left. Go at lunch time to eat for less than 10 Euros.

22: Creperie Bretonne

The real deal from Brittany. Savory crepes made with buckwheat flour (the Italian - with olives and goat cheese and olive oil is my favorite. Tartiflette - with cheese and potatoes - is good, too). Sweet crepes made with white flour - try Breton caramel or chocolate with coconut. They also serve wonderful (bio) apple cider from Normandy.

Más sobre Creperie Bretonne

23: Hühnerhaus

Some of the best rotisserie chicken in Berlin. 2.50 euros for 1/4 chicken - plus garlic mayonaisse and/or spicy sauce. Always crowded, but the line goes fast and it's worth the wait.

Más sobre Hühnerhaus

24: Hisar Restaurant - Türkische Küche

The best doner in Berlin? At least according to cabbie Fazil K. The meat is good here - sliced melt in your mouth thin but very salty - and sauces are better than most doner spots. Bread gets a solid 'C.' Not bad if you're in the neighborhood.

Más sobre Hisar Restaurant - Türkische Küche

25: Aspendos

A popular doner spot in Schoeneberg. The meat is average - it's the bread that makes this place worth a special trip. A little old man with forearms of steel spends 12 hours a day kneading and slinging dough into the brick oven - it makes a huge difference in the doner. Skip the sauces altogether.

Hauptstraße 11

26: Xigon Vietnam & Asia

Solid Vietnamese in Friedrichshain. Number 86/ Knusprige Ente/yellow curry with duck is the dish to get here (5.50 euros)

Más sobre Xigon Vietnam & Asia

27: Eismanufaktur Berlin

Some of the best ice cream I tried in Berlin. The Ceylon mint flavor is remarkable. They also have shops in Mitte (Auguststr. 63, 10117) and Kreuzberg (Graefestraße 7, 10967)

Más sobre Eismanufaktur Berlin

28: Galerie am Prater

Classic beer garden that's on the radar for a reason. Huge outdoor patio with picnic tables - a great place to spend a warm afternoon. If you're looking for food to soak up your beer, you can order the usual German suspects (sausage, fries) here.

Más sobre Galerie am Prater

29: Datscha - Café & Bar

All you can eat Sunday brunch for 9.50 euros. A little pricey, but carrot blinis, roasted vegetables and good cheese are worth it. If you think you don't like Russian food, you might want to taste this stuff before you decide.

Más sobre Datscha - Café & Bar

30: Grill und Schlemmerbuffet

Some of the better doner in Berlin. Meat and chicken are greasy and very salty but beautifully seasoned and vegetables are always fresh.

Grill und Schlemmerbuffet
Rosenthaler Straße 1
10119 Berlin, Germany

Más sobre Grill und Schlemmerbuffet

31: Mustafa's Gemuse Kebab

For me, the best doner in Berlin. Roasted chicken, fried vegetables, feta, sumac, flat-leaf parsley, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and fresh lemon - every ingredient is fresh and there's serious synergy happening in the durum doner especially. A multi-textured party for 4 euros.

32: Mitte Meer

Gorgeous Mediterranean supermarket with high-quality imports from Italy, Spain and Latin America. Don't miss the cheese refrigerator. Great place to stop before a picnic in Tiergarten.

They have another location in Mitte (Invalidenstrasse 50/51, 10557)

Más sobre Mitte Meer

33: Centro Italia Market

30 varieties of espresso, 20 brands of olive oil, and just about everything else you need to find your inner Italian. A warehouse style grocery store that also stocks fresh produce and a few spices from India.

Another location in Marienfelde at Grossbeerenstrasse 169-71.

34: Sorsi & Morsi Wine Bar

The wine bar you construct in your dreams - dark paneling, glasses for every varietal and an owner who can pick a perfect glass to suit your tastes and price range. Great place to start an evening or unwind after a hard day.

Note: Smoking is allowed

35: Café Hilde

Another wonderful Berlin cafe. Near-perfect cappuccino, cozy chairs, big windows onto a beautiful Prenzlauer Berg corner, books for trading, and all you can drink mint water. A place to read, to work and/or to visit with friends.

Más sobre Café Hilde

36: Curry 36

One of the best curry wursts in Berlin. The secret here is high quality curry powder and constant turnover that keeps the sausage fresh.

37: Konnopke's Imbiß

Iconic curry wurst stand in the shadow of the U-Bahn tracks. Open until 8pm and closed on Sundays.

38: Didim Doner Kebab

Solid doner kebab. Great spicy sauce. They hand-make and brick oven bake their Turkish pizza dough. But the real highlight here is çi? köfte - raw beef and/or lamb mixed with bulgur wheat, tomato and pepper paste, and flat leaf parsley. Wrap it in a leaf of iceberg lettuce and you've got an appetizer so tasty you may want to skip the doner altogether.

Didim Doner

39: Boxhagener Platz Saturday Market

Produce, cheese, wurst, hummus, and everything you need to make a beautiful meal. If you're not in the mood to cook, pick up mom-made Turkish food, falafel, grilled fish or espresso. My favorite spot at the market is Bock & Gardener's jam stand, where "chief confiturier" Peter Burkhardt sells extraordinary sour cherry jam and other sweet spreads. (You can also find him at the Turkish market in Kreuzberg on Fridays.)

Más sobre Boxhagener Platz Saturday Market

40: Knofi Feinkostladen Inh. Senay Celik Feinkost

Tasty gözleme (a Turkish version of a crepe stuffed with vegetables and/or beef) grilled to order. The cold appetizer platter is great, too. To bring some of the flavor home, check out their spice shop across the street (it's a spice cart at the moment while they do renovations).
