She lived with a host mom and traveled to Punjab, from which she was able to see Pakistan, which "was incredible." She traveled to Goa and swam in the Indian Ocean, spent some time in the rural, desert areas of Harayana, took a brief trip to Jaipur and went to Agra in Uttar Pradesh to see the Taj Mahal. She assisted with surgeries and worked directly with most of the animals, including elephants, monkeys, horses, snakes and otters. She traveled all around Thailand, picked up some Thai, learned how to scuba dive and did underwater research with faculty.

Emily's photo won the People's Choice Award in the Fall 2012 Study Abroad Photo Contest:

Celeste learned how to read and write in Arabic, all while gaining invaluable knowledge of Islamic history and philosophy. Not to mention, she explored some of the modern architecture in Dubai, went backpacking along the rocky mountain coasts of Oman in the Musandam sultanate, rented a dhow (traditional fishing boat) and searched for a dolphin grotto in the Straight of Hormuz (she found it!). She even had the chance to learn more about the political environment of the Middle East, joining in on a peaceful demonstration for democracy one afternoon.

Celeste completed an Action Research Center internship in summer 2012, working with State Farm and Mid Central Community Action, assisting in the coordination of NeighborWorks Week, a week dedicated to the revitalization of homes in the community.

Max spent a semester studying at Al Akhawayn University. He had the chance to explore one of the largest caves in Africa (and lost his flashlight!), learned from and formed friendships with Moroccan and American students and families, and explored major cities, including Casablanca.

Max shares, "The food in Morocco was very different. I ate a snail for the first time and explored Moroccan couscous and tagines (food cooked in clay pots)." He even made it to Spain and Gibraltar.

"The biggest take away, hands down, is that studying abroad in many cases will open your mind up to so many new outlooks and ways of thinking. Being in a country such as Morocco completely changed how I view my life back in America. Back home, we are so fortunate."

Max has also served as the president of the IWU Film Society and the Student Senate representative of the Residence Hall Association.

Vicki really enjoyed the hands-on aspect of her program. For example, she studied in a Medical Practice and Policy program, which was taught by physicians, and took classes in a local hospital. Vicki had the chance to make her "book learning" come to life: She learned about various diseases, got the chance to talk with patients and write up patient history reports, and traveled to different hospitals in Denmark and around Europe.

She writes, "The coolest part of this was learning some clinical skills, such as putting in an IV, setting an arm in a cast, suturing and (my favorite) performing a lumbar puncture (aka a spinal tap--this we did on a dummy, not actual patients!).

"Studying abroad gave me such a sense of empowerment! I didn't know anyone when I first arrived in Denmark, was living with strangers in a homestay, didn't speak Danish, had never been away from my family for so long (I had never even been outside of North America!) and wasn't even sure why I would do something so crazy as study abroad. But after four months, I left with amazing friendships, a new Danish mother and sister and more confidence in my abilities to handle new and unexpected situations on my own."

Stephanie took courses in Rome for a semester. As part of one of her anthropology courses, she had the opportunity to join a research group studying the role of the American Catholic community in Rome, focusing on the church Santa Susanna. They observed and participated in Mass and she even interviewed the rector at Santa Susanna.

"It seems simple, but the coolest thing for me was walking the streets of Rome. It's a very walkable city - I tried to find new routes to school and home, which was easy to do. I was always finding new shops and loved listening to people speaking Italian to each other along the way. My favorite route to school was along the Via Guilia, a street built in the early 1500s. It was incredible imagining all the people who had walked there before me."

One trip took Hillary deep into the rainforest, where she was able to see an in-progress museum, which was planned in order to educate people on all the different ethnic groups in the rainforest. "They still need a lot of help in order to complete the project, and I am hoping that I will be able to help them in some way."
"I will always hold on to the love that I have for the Kichwa people. I will also always be thankful that I have had such a blessed life."

Hillary has served as the president of the Spanish and Latino Student Association.

Richard also spent time as a translator at the research base and was featured along with other volunteers on China's national television.

One of the coolest things Richard was able to do "was to camp at an altitude of 5190 meters (17027 feet) in Tibet next to Namtso Lake. While in Tibet, I conducted my own research project on Tibet's education system and how the Chinese Communist Party controls what is taught to the children in the autonomous region."

I was so afraid before I left that I wouldn't be able to handle the homesickness, that my French wasn't good enough to get around and that I wouldn't be able to adjust to the culture.
