Begin in Paris and head southwest to Bayonne.
We ate the sandwiches and drank the Chablis and watched the country out of the window. The grain was just beginning to ripen and the fields were full of poppies.

Arrive in Bayonne.
Bayonne is a nice town. It is::text like a very clean Spanish town and it is on a big river. Already, so early in the morning, it was very hot on the bridge across the river. We walked out on the bridge and then took a walk through town.

Head into Basque Country climbing until your reach Pamplona.
We had coffee at the Iruna, sitting in comfortable wicker chairs looking out from the cool of the arcade at the big square.

Head further into the mountain to Auritz (Burguete in the novel) for trout fishing in the Irati River.
As I baited up, a trout shot up out of the white water into the falls and was carried down.

Head back to Pamplona for the San Fermin festival to catch the running of the bulls.
Suddenly, a crowd came down the street. They were all running, packed close together.

Now it's back to France to visit the chic seaside resort of Biarritz.
There was the green of the headlands, the white, red-roofed villas, patches of forest, and the ocean very blue with the tide out and the water curling far out on the beach.

Back over the border head for the Spanish seaside resort of San Sebastian.
Even on a hot day San Sebastian has a certain early-morning quality. The trees seem as though their leaves were never quite dry.

End the trip in Madrid the setting for the final scene in the book.
I saw Madrid come up over the plain, a compact white sky-line on the top of a little cliff away off across the sun-hardened country.
