Hampshire fire and rescue adds to Facebook:

We have been receiving several calls, mainly from the east of the county, on 'Le Pong' being reported by BBC.

The smell is a leak from a factory in Rouen, France, of mercaptan, a harmless additive to natural gas.

The smell is being reported as very unpleasant but is of no threat to the public.
