February 6, 2013, thousands of dead fish Fitzroy river: Witness stated; Mass murder, carelessness ... call it what you want, I've never seen such a disaster on this scale. Again, low oxygen levels being looked at. On February 8, dead fish strecthing along 40km of the Fitzroy river was described as "immeasurable". The recent floods are being blamed for creating low oxygen levels in the water however, an avid fishermen stated that he didn't remember a single dead fish after the 2011 floods.

February 24, 2013: Thousands of dead fish were found Sunday floating in the Cuyahoga River and lining the river banks between Heritage Park and Merwin Avenue in the Flats. A witness reported seeing large clumps of dead fish with reddish bruises on them, floating down the river. Officials don't know the cause but say it's normal for shad to die this time of year. They say; extreme temperature fluctuations can cause the fish to go into shock.
