We left the ramp near the hamlet of Long lake about 10 am and headed Northeast up the lake. The lake is a treasure in the Adirondacks oriented with the prevailing breezes, almost 10 miles long and about half a mile wide. A gentile breeze aided our progress up the lake directly toward the Seward mountains. After about 7 miles we could view the Santanoni range to our right. After entering the Raquette River we found a laento and had lunch. we headed down river for another mile and turned right on the Cold River and proceeded up river for about .75 miles impeded more by the shallow water than by the current. We found the leanto and set up camp. the site apparently used to be quite scenic but has grown in quite a bit in the past forty years. I know this not from experience but rather from reading the entries in the log kept in the leanto. The entries could be quite colorful. in the morning we headed down river again toward the Raquette River Carry.
