People travelling during the late May bank holiday weekend will benefit from over 98 per cent of England’s motorways and major A roads being free of roadworks. The Highways Agency will be clearing eight out of ten sets of roadworks to help people on their way over the bank holiday weekend. More than 200 miles of roadworks are being completed and a further 130 miles suspended between Friday 24 May and Tuesday 28 May.In all, 66 sets of roadworks are due to be completed on the Highways Agency’s roads ahead of the bank holiday. A further 37 sets of roadworks and lane restrictions are due to be removed by 06:00 on Friday 24 May and will not be put back before 00:01 on Tuesday 28 May. Lane restrictions or temporary speed limits need to remain in place at these 18 locations for the safety of drivers and their passengers. Narrow lanes and no hardshoulder, with 50mph speed limit - 19.25 miles of roadworks - Moderate delays expected. - Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for bank holiday weekend: There is a temporary barrier protecting the roadworks site and reduced speed limit also need as some safety systems are disabled while the work is underway.
Contraflow with 40mph speed limit - 2 miles of roadworks - Moderate delays expected. - Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for bank holiday weekend: There are temporary safety barriers in place and removal and reinstatement of these would take longer than the holiday weekend.
50mph speed limit, with narrow lanes and lane closure in places - 18 miles of roadworks - Nil to Slight delays expected. - Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for bank holiday weekend: Temporary safety barrier is in place alongside open excavations and speed limit needed because of narrow lanes.
Narrow lanes and 40mph speed limit, side road access also closed - 9.6 miles of roadworks - Nil to slight delays expected. - Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for bank holiday weekend: The road narrowing at the old B1112 junction cannot be removed as there is now a deep excavation and road cut for the new underpass.
Contraflow with single narrow lane each way and 40mph speed limit - 5.2 miles of roadworks - Nil to slight delays expected. - Reason roadworks cannot be lifted for bank holiday weekend: Westbound carriageway viaduct has been demolished and is being rebuilt.
