8: Second-hand CW report Irbin (NYT)

A report from International Herald Tribune/New York Times print and online editions, dated August 21, quoted the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) as saying the attacks also hit Erbeen. It also quoted an Erbeen activist as saying the attack had hit "surrounding areas". We believe the SOHR information can be safely disregarded.

SOHR line (dropped from edits):
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which follows the conflict from Britain through a network of contacts inside Syria, said the attacks took place in the suburbs of Zamalka, Ein Terma and Erbeen, all of which are east of Damascus and have a strong rebel presence.

Erbeen activist quote:
"An activist reached via Skype in Erbeen said the attack began at 2 a.m., when rockets struck surrounding areas. He and his colleagues rushed to evacuate the wounded, and they had to break down doors of homes to get them out.

“I saw many children lying on beds as if they were sleeping, but unfortunately they were dead,” said the activist, who gave his name as Abu Yassin. He added that he believed that the number of dead was in the hundreds.

“We thought this regime would not use chemical weapons, at least these days with the presence of the U.N. inspectors,” he said. “It is reckless. The regime is saying, ‘I don’t care.'”

Report from Zamalka activist:
Another activist, who gave only his first name, Mohammed, said he was in Zamalka when the rockets landed. He said he was helping to evacuate the wounded when his eyes started burning, his vision went blurry and he felt dizzy. He said the dead and wounded were taken to hospitals in a number of nearby districts, making it hard for family members to find them. In Zamalka, many of the dead were laid out in front of a mosque, where someone called over the loudspeakers for residents to come and identify their relatives.

9: CW REPORTED MOADAMYEH

Moadimiyah Al Sham: Separate Attack?

There were report from Moadimiyah Coordinating Committee's Facebook page of a separate attack, which are detailed below.

0536 — Reports dozens killed by CW rockets 'in the city'. Location not specified.

1144 — Continued shelling reported, but no mention of CW.

1757 — Names five martyrs from Moadamiyeh killed in "chemical massacre of August 21". No location for strike given.

Several subsequent posts updated on a small number of CW casualty figures from the "chemical massacre of August 21". None mentioned location beyond saying 'the city'. However, it is possible that the reports refer to Moadamiyeh. A YouTube channel from Moadamiyeh posted videos of alleged CW victims here, here, and here. These did not shows the kind of mass-casualty incidents portrayed in videos from East Ghouta.

12: syriafredoom (Kafr Batna)

Known media activist account associated with Kafr Batna. Videos mention casualties coming from Zamalka, Ein Tarma or both.

We are not sure where these videos were taken. According to most accounts, Kafr Batna not affected by attack. It may have been a treatment centre, or the video could have been taken elsewhere.

Doc is listed as being from Kaft Batna but the location of the clinic is not stated.

A doctor from the town of Kafr Batna said he rushed to his clinic soon after the attack and found 100 patients.

“We had men, women and children, all of them choking and having trouble breathing,” said the doctor, Sakhr. “Some of them had foam coming out of their mouths and nostrils and many had lost consciousness.”

By the end of that day, Dr. Sakhr of Kafr Batna said, 16 of the 160 bodies collected at his clinic had not been claimed. Volunteers took the bodies to a nearby graveyard, photographed their faces one by one, and buried them in a mass grave.

For those who survived, there was a different kind of grim reckoning.
