I've chosen to pass an entire year without shopping in supermarkets. Is it possible or fantastical? Pleasurable or a pain in the ass? Is Britain really as beholden to the big box retailers as it seems, or can we still fend for ourselves with indie businesses and markets? Here is a map of the independent businesses & locations where I've bought food so far. Blue markers are food shops, yellow markers are alcohol shops and pink shows restaurants and cafes where good local food is available.

1: Honey from Bedrule

My neighbours, who produce light wildflower honey and sell it at their house.

2: The People's Supermarket

An awesome concept - community owned supermarket in the center of London. In reality a little disappointing - many regular highly processed brands, a lot of imported produce on understocked shelves. Come on London, you can do better!!

3: Earthy Foods & Goods Ltd

Ratcliffe terrace branch has a really well stocked store and gorgeous cafe. You could easily fulfill all your grocery and lunching needs here.

4: Earthy Canonmills

Although the shop is a little sparse sometimes (and the veg a little overpriced) this is the store I use most often. It's just round the corner from a huge Tesco, so this Earthy gets EXTRA support from me. Also, stellar restaurant that is awesome for Sunday brunch...

5: The Beerhive

Perfect pitstop on the way home. Excellent selection of UK & international beers.

6: Turnbulls

Decent cafe, good cheeses, and all the usual luxury goods - jams, chutneys, oatcakes, etc etc. But I recommended that they stock local milk, butter and other normal foods because there is NO COMPETITION ON THIS HIGH ST!!

9: Herbie Of Edinburgh

Tiny shop, big personality, excellent products, unparalleled service. These people know how it's done. Not always local, but always good. And their bread is some of my favorite in Edinburgh.

10: Real Foods Ltd

A little crunchy for my taste, but a great place to get all your herbs, grains and cure-all teas. Also, they do bulk sales which is a BIG bonus in my books.

11: Edinburgh Farmers' Market

Meat heavy, but a thoroughly pleasant morning out and about. I'm a regular.

12: Dunbar Community Bakery

Supported by a growing number of locals who all buy a share in this little bakery. They're doing great work to build their selection of local, ethical ingredients. They also have a totally virtuous apprenticeship program to teach young people artisanal baking. Yeah! Go DCB!!

17: Gardeners Cottage

Communal tables, 5 course set menu for £25, wonderful atmosphere.::text Like being at your favorite friend's house. That friend who loves to slave away in the kitchen, cook elaborate meals and present it beautifully whilst plying you with tons of wine. Love this place. Will definitely go back.
