On January 21, 2011 the Volunteer and Civic Engagement Center took a group of 8 students to the Ronald McDonald House to celebrate the MLK Holiday. While they were there they did some cleaning, cooking and organizing.

A group of 9 UIS students served at the Family Service Center in fall of 2010 as part of the United Way Day of Action. Students helped clean up the Center's yard, planted flowers, and cleaned out an old building for future use. Click on the link below to see more photos from this event.

This annual Halloween event is the kickoff to the UIS Holiday Stars Project, a month-long donation drive to benefit local people in need. Over the course of three years UIS students have collected over 14,000 pounds of food for the Central Illinois Foodbank. Go to

One of our favorite events of the year, the Springfield Good as Gold Ceremony awards local community and university members who have dedicated their time, talents, and creativity to promote the social good of the greater Springfield area. The American Association of University Women local scholarship fund has provided support for women returning to school at UIS for over 35 years. Their annual Used Book Sale helps fund these scholarships, and the volunteers at UIS happily lend a hand to get all those books sorted and moved around!

Two UIS athletic team's (men's golf and women's soccer) and one Volunteer Center group worked a Saturday of shifts at the Mini O'Beirne Crisis Nursery Holiday Store. The Holiday Store lets children pick out their own presents by browsing through shelves of donations. No pictures yet, but you can imagine the smiles on their faces!

The Volunteer Center took group of UIS Students to this local Springfield neighborhood to raise awareness of the environmental impact of storm drain dumping. The students distributed door tags and painted warnings on the drains themselves.

For the past two years, UIS students have provided ongoing support to the Animal Protective League, giving the animals in the shelter the love and attention they deserve. If you're looking for a new pet please consider adopting an animal from your local APL shelter.

UIS students contributed a total of 21 hours of service to help keep the athletes of the Koke Mill Women's Biathlon safe from automobiles. A big thank you to the helpful Koke Mill staff who gave our van a jump after an absent minded volunteer coordinator left the lights on!

A record number of University of Illinois Springfield students (35!) participated in Alternative Spring Break this year. The group stayed at a local elementary school in Galveston Texas with other students from across the country, volunteering for 8 1/2 hours a day. The students took on the project as part of the One Mission Initiative, a faith-based organization serving in Galveston to help the city recover from Hurricane Ike.

On August 26, 2011, 7 student volunteers helped Habitat for Humanity begin their Youth Build as part of the UIS Volunteer and Civic Engagement Center's Service-A-Thon. They helped sort out the bricks from the dirt that was left over from the demolition project that happened the weeks before hand. The bricks will be salvaged for the build and the dirt will be used to level the ground under the cement.

Mission Outreach began in 2002. Since its inception more than 1,200,000 lbs. of usable equipment and supplies have been saved from landfills. Over the last two years a number of UIS students have volunteered their time to sort and package these medical supplies for shipment all over the world.
On August 26, 2011, 10 students volunteered with Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach to sort medical supplies as part of the UIS Volunteer and Civic Engagement Center's Service-A-Thon.
