Ronald McDonald House Service Splash - January 2011
On January 21, 2011 the Volunteer and Civic Engagement Center took a group of 8 students to the Ronald McDonald House to celebrate the MLK Holiday.  While they were there they did some cleaning, cooking and organizing.

2: United Way Day of Action

A group of 9 UIS students served at the Family Service Center in fall of 2010 as part of the United Way Day of Action. Students helped clean up the Center's yard, planted flowers, and cleaned out an old building for future use. Click on the link below to see more photos from this event.

3: Trick or Treat for Canned Goods

Trick or Treat for Canned Goods 2010

 
 
This annual Halloween event is the kickoff to the UIS Holiday Stars Project, a month-long donation drive to benefit local people in need. Over the course of three years UIS students have collected over 14,000 pounds of food for the Central Illinois Foodbank. Go to http://www.uis.edu/volunteer/holidayproject to learn more.

9: Polar Plunge

The Polar Plunge is Special Olympics signature fundraiser for the year, and has earned its reputation as one of the most entertaining fundraisers around! A group of 8 UIS students and staff participated in the Plunge in 2009, raising $590 for Special Olympics athletes. (in just three days!) Read UIS Plunger Howard Kang's blog about the event at:

One of our favorite events of the year, the Springfield Good as Gold Ceremony awards local community and university members who have dedicated their time, talents, and creativity to promote the social good of the greater Springfield area. 13: Alternative Spring Break 2009

"Students with UIS’ Alternative Spring Break and Habitat for Humanity student organizations spent their spring breaks not only soaking up the sun in the south but also assisting Hurricane Katrina victims.

"Twenty-four students and two supervisors made the trip to Mandeville, Louisiana to build homes in the southeast Louisiana area."

14: UIS Mentoring Program - Harvard Park Elementary

The UIS Mentoring Program at Harvard Park Elementary is one of our favorite programs. UIS students work in collaboration with Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Springfield School District 186 to be positive role models for local at-risk youth.

10 UIS students removed invasive species in Washington Park that were threatening native Illinois plant life. Thanks to our partners at Friends of the Sangamon Valley for their support of this project and many other like it.

17: AAUW Used Book Sale

The American Association of University Women local scholarship fund has provided support for women returning to school at UIS for over 35 years. Their annual Used Book Sale helps fund these scholarships, and the volunteers at UIS happily lend a hand to get all those books sorted and moved around!

19: Mini O'Beirne Holiday Store

Two UIS athletic team's (men's golf and women's soccer) and one Volunteer Center group worked a Saturday of shifts at the Mini O'Beirne Crisis Nursery Holiday Store. The Holiday Store lets children pick out their own presents by browsing through shelves of donations. No pictures yet, but you can imagine the smiles on their faces!

20: Storm Drain Stenciling

Drain Painting and Door Tag Hanging

 
 
The Volunteer Center took group of UIS Students to this local Springfield neighborhood to raise awareness of the environmental impact of storm drain dumping. The students distributed door tags and painted warnings on the drains themselves.

22: Animal Protective League

For the past two years, UIS students have provided ongoing support to the Animal Protective League, giving the animals in the shelter the love and attention they deserve. If you're looking for a new pet please consider adopting an animal from your local APL shelter.

For the first time in 2009, the Volunteer Center was able to offer students mentoring opportunities right on campus. 24: Women's Biathlon at the Koke Mill Medical Center

UIS students contributed a total of 21 hours of service to help keep the athletes of the Koke Mill Women's Biathlon safe from automobiles. A big thank you to the helpful Koke Mill staff who gave our van a jump after an absent minded volunteer coordinator left the lights on!

As part of our Homecoming 2009 Activities, the Volunteer Center led a group of students to serve at MERCY Communities, an organization that gives homeless mothers and their children a safe place to stay and learn self-sufficiency.

Camp Widjiwagan Spring Cleaning

6 UIS students spent the day cleaning, scraping, and putting a fresh coat of paint on the wooden benches and tables at our local Girl Scouts' Camp Widjiwagan. We also made a little time for roasted hot dogs and s'mores.

30: Alternative Spring Break 2010

Alternative Spring Break 2010 

A record number of University of Illinois Springfield students (35!) participated in Alternative Spring Break this year. The group stayed at a local elementary school in Galveston Texas with other students from across the country, volunteering for 8 1/2 hours a day. The students took on the project as part of the One Mission Initiative, a faith-based organization serving in Galveston to help the city recover from Hurricane Ike.

Closing the Food Gap/Oxfam Hunger Banquet

 
The Hunger Banquet is a program that allows the participants to see the food inequalities around the world and to realize how their decisions affect others in the world. This year Mark Winnie was our key note speaker. He explored the growing problem of obesity in America, and encouraged everyone to participate in what he called "food democracy". 36: Habitat for Humanity

On August 26, 2011, 7 student volunteers helped Habitat for Humanity begin their Youth Build as part of the UIS Volunteer and Civic Engagement Center's Service-A-Thon. They helped sort out the bricks from the dirt that was left over from the demolition project that happened the weeks before hand.  The bricks will be salvaged for the build and the dirt will be used  to level the ground under the cement.

38: Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach

Mission Outreach began in 2002. Since its inception more than 1,200,000 lbs. of usable equipment and supplies have been saved from landfills. Over the last two years a number of UIS students have volunteered their time to sort and package these medical supplies for shipment all over the world.
 

On August 26, 2011, 10 students volunteered with Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach to sort medical supplies as part of the UIS Volunteer and Civic Engagement Center's Service-A-Thon.
