Kawiarna Naukowa is famous for promoting activism: vegetarianism, feminism, independent associations and organizations fighting for human rights, freshly emerging bands and young creation. Also anarchists identify themselves with this place somehow.

Buy yourself a beer with gigner syrup and find your place in one of three rooms. The last one is quite typical for screenings, exhibitions, lectures and even concerts. It’s also really active spot when it comes to cultural events.

Indian place. You can sit either on a cushion or choose one of pouffes – all Indian-like decorated. Small, wooden tables, candles and the best mojito in the city!

On the first floor, in the right wing of the building of the library there’s a canteen. Cheap food.

Dumplings, mayonnaise, cakes – are all made at the spot. During summer months one can enjoy the summer garden in the Alley of Roses.

There’s plenty of liquor to choose from, but I always ask for “Barmanska”. It’s a vodka, sugar (brown or white, your choice), and lemon (or lime) concoction that always leaves me wanting more.

"As did Wislawa Szymborska – our lovely, modest Nobel poet (found dead at the beginning of 2012). She used to sit just behind the coffee machine. Upstairs she celebrated winning the Nobel prize with her dearest friends."

You enter Antycafe from the street and inside you will find 2 bars on opposite ends of the place; the second part is for smokers.
According to the name it is a place more for a beer than a coffee, but it doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to drink some good coffee here.

"But if you don’t feel like eating you can just sit in the cafe tasting beer, chocolate or something that I really recommend – kwas chlebowy. It is an old Slovenian drink with an original taste; kwas is not easy to find in shops so if you have an opportunity, you need to try it."

The first time I went there I was very impressed but also overwhelmed with the amount of choices I had. Take your time, read the “book” (the menu, it explains everything) or ask the staff for recommendations.

"Karma can be good or bad, but in this place it is connected with food. As my friend said recently, in this place she can be sure that it is safe to eat a soup without wondering what is inside. In Karma they offer vegetarian and vegan cooking but it doesn’t mean that if you like meat you won’t find something good – it will just be without meat 
. I am sure you will like it because it is well-seasoned and also served in a nice way."
