Pros:
Easy to reach, but only by bus, no train.
Reasonable accommodation, some really nice.
Not too much of a party scene.
Some nice upscale restaurants for occasions.
Cons: 3 hours in the bus.
Not really luxurious, a bit raggedy here & there. Perfectly normal for Thailand.

beautiful nature, but gruelling bus trip (or a flight). Way up in the north.

This place has a genuine white sand beach and probably the best coral close to Mak.
Ko Kham has a nice little beach club area - blinding white sand, very clear water, okay snorkelling, showers etc. Costs 100baht but my entry ticket from Cococape resort also entitled me to a free soft drink or water.
Cococape charges 100 extra for two way transfer - you specify the times.

Ko Rayang Nok is a similar distance (to Kham) to the south-west of Mak. The closest I've been is on the passing speedboat to Ko Kut, but the beach sure looks nice, similar to Kham's and like Kham you can day-visit for a small charge. There is also a resort there - looks to be flashpacker/lower midrange in standard from the website.

About midway along the western side of the peninsula is Pano Bungalow with a hell of a lot of nice looking bungalows built along the hilly side of the peninsula. These would have fabulous views up the island towards Ao Kao beach and killer sunsets. The joint looked lower-midrange to me, but KOH MAK com suggests pricing is more flashpacker. The place seemed largely deserted of tourists when I went past.

Baan Ao Nid is one of the two villages on the island. It consists of a small cluster of houses, some businesses including restaurants and small stores plus the pier itself. This has one speedboat service plus the slow boat back to the mainland operating.
Close to the pier is Ball Cafe with coffee, yummy snacks, internet, trip booking and motorcycle/bicycle hire. Mr Ball is a very helpful guy and runs the rather excellent komak.com.
Note there is a small cluster of businesses around the intersection of the road north from Ao Nid and the main southern east-west road. These include a health centre, gas station, a couple of minimarts and several restaurants.

Very nice position at the better eastern end of Ao Kao beach - the only other joint around was Lazy Dayz next door where I spent considerable time because its nice food was mabye 20% cheaper than Ao Khao's excellent stuff.
Ao Kao Resort's restaurant is in a panoramic position on a small headland at the east end of Ao Kao beach with Lazy Day beach a similar distance behind. Bungalows are inland from the restaurant and beach.
Located in the western part of the Island down the road in front of the Koh Mak school, 900 meters towards the sea passing the coconut farm, the restaurant is by the sea. It is a very good place to enjoy the sunset and the white sand beach (Ao Kao means White Bay in Thai).
The Ao Kao restaurant serve Thai, International, as well as fresh Seafood supplied by the local fishermen’s.
The restaurant uses their own coconuts to create authentic Thai curries. It’s the perfect place for families. They have all kind of drinks, beers, wine and cocktails.

25: Lazy Day beach
Located in the western part of Koh Mak, down from the Sudhidhanakul Rd. towards the sea 800 meters passing the coconut farm. Lazy Days has a very calm and intimate atmosphere.The restaurant serves Thai, International Food and also Thai style snacks, cocktails and wine.

Muslim Restaurant (1217-9 New Road, +2 233 1010) is unprepossessing and one of the oldest restaurants in the city, it serves one of the best beef panaeng curries, with cumin, spices and salt. They cater for local workers who sniff at the tourists, but only because they might take that extra, last portion.

On the southern part of Koh Mak near the Ao Nid Pier you will find the Koh Mak Museum. It is a white building facing the beach and was turned into a museum by the Sutthithankul family who owns the house.
This museum is filled with maps and images that tell visitors the story of Koh Mak. It is a nice way to learn about the history and takes you back to the time when the island was first settled by the Siamese at the beginning of the twentieth century.

A small elephant camp called Koh Mak Pang Chang was established in a quiet area in the west of the island near Laem Tukkata in 2009. They currently have three elephants.
Prices are short treks for 500 Baht/person and a longer one (including bathing the elephant and transfers from your resort for 900 Baht/person). You’ll follow trails through the jungle and also head along the beach on elephant back.
