Per Kent / Sea Level: One of our favorites in the Louisiades was Kamatal Island ( it does NOT look to be a viable anchorage ~ looks to be no way in, but Jimmy will come out in his dugout and lead you in I am sure.)

It is @ 10 56 839 S 152 42 424 E

With regret, we report that what we thought was a safe, friendly town and anchorage in PNG turned out to be not so. We arrived in Kokopo on Monday, 7 March 2011, from the Solomons.

On Thursday night, 10 March, we were awakened at about 11:30 p.m. by 2 men wielding bush knives coming down through our V-berth hatch screen landing quite literally on top of us.

35: Kaparoka village

26th January 2008
armed robbery

n a separate incident The Coastal Passage reported that yacht O’LGeta skippered by Roy Griffiths was boarded and ransacked by two men on Saturday 26th January 2008 at a village called Kaparoka, 40nm ESE of Port Moresby. At 2.30 am the men boarded the yacht with a 2 foot bush knife and cut the anchor line. Crewmember Michael, dived overboard and swam ashore; Roy Griffiths came up from his sleeping berth at the bow and fell overboard when one of the men tried to attack him. He stayed under the boat's side until the men had ransacked the yacht. They took a radio, food, 2 mobiles and 40 litres of diesel. After they had left Roy climbed back on board and motored quickly back toward Port Moresby. The police were alerted and travelled to Kaparoka where the two culprits were apprehended but managed to escape. It is reported that the village police will locate them and bring them back to Port Moresby.

2008:

Duke of York islands were pretty, but the locals treated you like an ATM - charges for everything from anchoring to walking in the village. You would get invited to see the school then charged a fee for it!
