Fantastic walk, with the reward of an outstanding castle ruin when you get there.

Great accommodation. We stayed in the Catherine Suite. Highly recommended.

3: Bamburgh Castle

Stunning looking castle and in a great setting. We did not visit on this occasion though.

4: Dunstanborough castle

Amazing coastal castle ruin. Made all the more of an adventure as you have to walk down the coast to get to it. Pin might be a bit out :-)

5: Holy Island

Causeway linked holy island is lovely day. Castle. Harbour. Walks. Recommended visit. Check the tide times before you cross to avoid being stuck as happens fairly regularly apparently.

6: Boat trips to Farne islands

Well worth a trip on a day when the sea isn't too rough

9: Alnwick historic town and caste, with gardends

Castle is where Harry potter was filmed. Recently opened garden there. Not been for years but good for a day

A lot of history here

12: Low Newton

Tiny fishing village with pub. Lovely beach too.

13: Craster Smoked Fish

Yummy. Lovely village too, and a great base to head off on the coastal walk to Dunstaburgh Castle, which is well work the 2 mile round trip as there are stunning views.

17: Allendale Village

Nice Pub, nice river walk

18: Plan your crossing to Holy Island

The road is tidal and you can only cross at low tide. Make sure you don't get stuck on the island!

19: Seahouses

Not a very exciting place, a bit like a mini-Blackpool for the NE

Super day out. Can't imagine anyone not enjoying this living museum. Get the year pass ticket for not extra cost as it's unlikely that you will get round it all in one day.

Smallish swimming pool for public use too. Can get a bit busy by the looks of it.

33: Wonderful Beach

The beach here is wonderful with fabulous views of the Castle and good swimming.

34: Nice Beach - but no swimming

This beach is wonderfully easy to reach, and great for an evening by the sea. There's no swimming because of the river but great walking and a good sea view.
The car park has a charge, but there was no one collecting it the evenings we went.

35: The Barn at Beal. Nice Cafe - with good views

Nice cafe hear with a good view over Holy Island. We intended to watch the tide come in at the bottom but there was nowhere to stop - too busy. This made for a good alternative with the binoculars. There is also a web cam feeding to a large screen TV in the cafe so you can watch potential strandees in comfort.

There is also a Bird of Prey centre here too which is OK but in my view not worth the £15 family ticket price.

36: Watch the tide come in

Little car park which is good for watching the tide come in. We didn't stop here  though, no room, and the road was full too.

37: Lindisfarne Priory

Very historic building, but don't get caught out paying to go in. You can look around most of it without paying, and unless you are English Heritage members it's a bit pricey for what you get.

38: Holy Island Castle

This is a must see. There are a number of walks that take you on a circular route.

We didn't make it as far as we expected because E fell down the stairs in the castle and hurt her ankle.

Also, there is a bus from the car park if you think that little ones might appreciate a ride.

39: Beauty Salon

If you fancy treating Mrs D there's a really nice salon here.

(We had access tot he swimming pool for the week, very nice).

40: The Hope and Anchor Pub

We had an evening meal here. Very tasty and reasonable prices too.

Don't make the same mistake as us and follow your Sat Nav into Alnwick down this road. We turned back before the ford. Definitely not a through road. Technology not always reliable!
