This walk is around 1.8 miles,
Start form the Maxwell building, walk along the river to the second bridge, through the housing estate around these meadows and back. Depending on the time of the year, you may see butterflies, wildflowers, and birds. Go with friends. Make it a weekly walk.

Drake Goldeneye Salford Docks on Manchester Ship Canal viewable from west side of Media City (this bird apparently only has half of one of it's wings, it appeared in early September, so could be a feral bird, or might have had a close call with a Mink ?)

8: Media City UK - Salford Quays

Salford Quays, the site of Media City UK, is classified as a Site of Biological Importance.
Here is a list of what you might see:
Mute Swan, Canada Goose, Mallard, Pochard, Tufted Duck, Goldeneye, Goosander, Mandarin Duck, Cormorant, Grey Heron, Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe, Ringed Plover, Lapwing, Peregrine, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Moorhen, Coot, Black-headed Gull, Common Gull, Goldfinch, Greenfinch. Skylark, Wheatear and Grey Wagtail.

The water levels can vary in some places and waders such as Common Sandpiper and Redshank have been seen.

Plants / Trees recorded include Common Ragwort, Birch, Buddleja, Rowan and Sallow.

9: Grey Squirrel

Grey Squirrel, Sciurus carolinensis, dreys can be seen in these trees. The drey consists mainly of dry leaves and twigs and is often found in the fork of a branch.

As the early birds come to work in the morning, it not uncommon to see rabbits on these lawns.

94: Bee Orchid

The Bee Orchid is a native plant usually found in pastures, field borders, banks and copses on dry chalk or limestone soils. Flowering is between June and July, and there are usually between 2 and 5 flowers that grow one above the other in a spike-like head. The Bee Orchid gets its name from the shape of the flowers.

Large groups of Bohemian Waxwing, Bombycilla garrulus, spotted here in Peel Park in January 2011. Generally only occurs in Great Britain during the winter. Look in rowan, Sorbus aucuparia, and hawthorn, Crataegus monogyna, as they are berry enthusiasts.

The Common Kingfisher, Alcedo atthis, is often seen along this stretch. It perches in trees and sometimes on the concrete footpath along the river.

From the upper floors of the Maxwell building it is possible to look down on the river Irwell and see a number of Grey Herons perching in the river side trees and feeding on fish in the river.

Myself and 3 fellow students at Salford Uni did a 2 hour bird survey (1 of 6 between now and April for an assignment) in peel park yeasterday.

Despite the awful weather the highlights included:

Goldfich
Siskin
Treecreeper
GS woodpecker
Goldcrest
Long-tailed tit (in great numbers)
Redwing
Song thrush (in good song)
Goldeneye
Little grebe

Plus plenty of the regulars...

It was a real treat to see so many great birds in the middle of Salford, pretty much on the uni campus! Looking forward to the next survey...

The Meadows

Lesser spotted woodpecker reported by Mike Noon “on a tree in the park inside the horseshoe bit of the Irwell opposite Peel Park”

two pairs of Goldeneye

Agecroft Bridge to just short of the weir situated just up river from Littleton Bridge

Masses of birds to look at and count!

Totals were:- 1 Green Sandpiper, 5 Snipe, 6 Lapwing, 8 Gadwall, 28 Tufted Duck, 3 Cormorant, 2 Mute Swan, 4 Goosander, 58 Goldeneye, 72 Mallard, c160 Canada Goose, 8 Little Grebe, 2 Teal, 11 Moorhen and 1 Grey Wagtail. In surrounding riverside vegetation - c30 Magpie,19 Lesser Redpoll and 2 Song Thrush.

In Peel Park - really good views of a Chiffchaff amongst a mixed tit/crest flock was a very nice surprise. 11 Long-tailed Tits, 2 Goldcrest and 3 Blue Tits. Also 2 Song Thrush and c12 Goldfinch (feeding on alder cones) and a flock of 7 Woodpigeons included a juvenile bird.

Agecroft Bridge downstream past Littleton Bridge and Castle Irwell and on to the Kersal footbridge, whilst at the same time incorporating a Timed Tetrad Visit (TTV) for the Atlas project for SD80A Lower Kersal.

46 species in total recorded on the TTV. Highlights of which were: -

1 Green Sandpiper was just downstream of the Agecroft Bridge
39 Goldeneye
10 Little Grebes
2 Grey Wagtails
1 Goosander
1 Cormorant
5 Tufted Duck.

On Littleton Road Playing Fields a flock of c350 gulls, approx c270 Black-headed, c60 Common and c20 Lesser-black Backed.

A Great Spotted Woodpecker was in Agecroft Cemetery, as were 3 Mistle Thrush. 5 Bullfinch, 3 Goldcrest and 2 each of Siskin, Lesser Redpoll, Fieldfare and 3 Redwing were logged.

Also singles of Reed Bunting, Jay and of the commoner species totals of 45 Magpies, 63 Mallard, 84 Feral Pigeon, 44 House Sparrow and 65 Starling.

Green Sandpiper still showing very well in same location, Also just a few hundred yards from this bird on the Irwell were 2 Little Grebe, 4 Goosander (1m,3f) and 7 Goldeneye together (all females).
