13: Magelleans Birthplace

In 1480, Ferdinand Magellean is born. By the age of 10 Magelleans parents both died. By the age of 12 he would be appoint to the queens Royal court as a messenger. During this time he would learn about navigation at sea and ships.

14: Seville

Magellean would begin his voyage to the spice islands on August 10, 1519. Magellean, with 5 ships in his command left Seville Spain and traveled down the Guadalquivir River to Sanlúcar de Barrameda. 15: Sanlucar de Barrameda

This point marks the offical port where Magelleans journey would begin. After leaving Seville, he and his crew spent 5 weeks here before they would depart on their historic voyage.

16: Canary Islands

Magellean and his crew will make a brief stop in the Canary Islands before continuing on to Cape Verde. (1519) The picture below is of the island Mirador Del Rio

17: Cape Verde

After arriving in Cape Verde, Magellean and his crew will head towards Brazil. The picture below is the island of Santiago one of the larger islands surrounding the Cape.

18: Mutiny

On November 20, 1519 Magellean discovers a mutiny plot by Capt. Juan de Cartegena who was aboard the San Antonio. Learning of the mutiny plot he will relieve de Cartegena of his duties and imprison him on the ship.

19: Crossing the Equator

In late November of 1519 Magellean and his crew would cross the equator in route to point in South America.

20: Land Ho!

In Dec of 1519, Magellean and his crew sited land. At this point they actually saw Brazil in South America.

21: Searching for a route

Magellean and his crew entered the Río de la Plata around modern-day Buenos Aires and sailed up the river for days trying to find a route to the Pacific ocean. After an unsuccessful journey along the river started to sail South to San Julián.

22: Harbors in Puerto San Julián

March 31, 1520, Magellean and his crew will harbor in a city that he and his crew will establish call San Julián. He and the crew would remain their for approximately 6 months. The reason for the long overlay was the worsening weather as winter was quickly approached. During this time a ship of his was wrecked by a storm and a mutiny occurred. During, this time two of the 5 ships captains will try to stage an unsuccessful mutiny. The crew will send out a scouting expedition with their ship the Santiago which will be wrecked by a sudden storm leaving Magellan 4 remaining ships.

23: Trickery at Sea

Magellen decided after harboring in Puerto San Julian for the winter he prepared to leave and navigate through the Strait that would later take his name. Realizing the difficulty in getting around South America he decided to kidnap a couple of Pantagonia Natives to point the way through the treacherous strait. Magellean decided to invite two of the Natives to board the ship for a "party". According to Antonio Pigetta at the end of the party the two men where showered with gifts, so many in fact, they could hold all of the gifts. The last gift given by Magellean to the unsuspecting natives was shackles of which Magellean aboliged the two men in putting on since their hands were already full. The two realizing what had happened tried to escape but to no avail. He left the new colony on Oct 18, 1520 heading for the strait.

24: Strait of Magellan

The weather around the strait was very cold and you can see from the image that snow and ice form in and around the area where his crew would have journeyed. The time Magellan would have made the journey through the treacherous strait would have been in late winter and early spring when temperatures can vary sharply around this latitude. During his travels through the strait Magellan will lose one more ship when its captain deserts the explorer leaving him with only 3 ships to continue through the strait.

25: Out of the Strait

After spending approximately 38 days in the Strait, will come out on the other side of the strait on Nov. 26th, 1520 and would start their voyage across the Pacific Ocean.

26: Magellean sails across Pacific

Magelleans crew would become the first crew to sail across the Pacific Ocean when there shiped landed in Guam in March 6, 1521. During the crossing of the Pacific Ocean many of Magelleans crew became sick with scurvy which is an illness caused by a lack of vitamin C.

27: Magellean lands in the Philippines

On March 16, 1521 Magellean and his crew landed on what we they thought were the Spice Islands but they weren't it was the Philippines.

28: Magellean dies

While in the Philippines Magellean became friends with Rajah Kulambo and the to sealed their friendship with a blood compact. While in the Philippines Magellean would convert people to Chrisitianity and had the people baptized, in April of 1521. Within a few weeks after the ceremony Magellean was killed in a local dispute on April 27, 1521.Magellan_1810_engraving.jpg

29: On to Borneo

After the death of their captain the crew made the decision to forge on with a new captain and new governor. They proceeded to Borneo in Indonesia, there the crew experienced more problems and 26 were killed. They will abandon on ship in this port knocking the total number ships down to two. The crew will harbor off the port outside of Brunei for 35 days before sailing on.

30: Maluka Islands

Will make a stop in the Maluka Islands where the two ships will load up with valuable spices before they head home to Spain. Soon after leaving the Spice Islands the Trinadad, one of the two remaining ships, developed a leak. The crew will repair the ship enough to continue after a smaller ship the Victoria proceed towards the Cape of Good Hope. The Trinadad will fall into the hands of the Portuguese enroute to the Cape and later be wrecked in a storm.

31: Cape of Good Hope

On May 6th, 1522, the remaining members of Magelleans crew finally rounded the Cape of Good Hope and started North to Spain. This is a modern picture of the area the crew passed on their way home.

32: Cape Verde Islands(part 2)

After rounding the Cape of Good Hope the remainder of Magellan's crew stopped in the familiar Cape Verde islands which was one of the early stops for the crew as they journeyed to the South tip of the Americas. At this point the captain saw it as dire need to stop after many of his crew died in going around the cape. The Portuduese who controlled the island detained 13 crew in the Cape Islands and at this point the remaining crew began its leg of the journey home. All that remained of Magellan original crew was 18 crew men, 1 captain, and the cargo of cloves and cinnamon. Below is the captain of the Victoria, Juan Sebastián del Cano, the man responsible for finishing Magellans voyage.

33: Home at last

On September 6, 1522 the crew of the Victoria docked at the Sanlúcar port in Spain with 533 hundredweight of cloves and cinnamon which more than paid for the 3 year voyage of the crew. A few years later 4 members from the original crew who were onboard the Trinadad would make their return to Spain as well. This voyage marked the first time any Euorpean sailor circumnavigated the Earth. The picure below is a representation of the only remaining ship the Victoria.
