9: Heartland Quality Foods, & Black Creek Ranch head office

Heartland Quality Foods has its roots deep in the Kamloops local food movement.  It began as a co-operative when, according to its website, 12 farmers wanted a better way to distribute their products.
It became a box scheme to be delivered to customers, eventually growing to include not only produce but cheese, milk and meats.
Heartland Quality Foods has now evolved to share a storefront with Black Creek Ranch, which is owned by the First Nations Agriculture Authority.
The store's commitment to local food is explicit and passionate.

13: Nu Leaf Produce Market

Nu Leaf is a new player on the local food scene in Kamloops.  Having opened Sept. 2011, on Nu Leaf's website co-owner Herman Hothi says, ”We’re trying to bring in as much local stuff as we can, produce as well as dry goods.
”We do lots of work with local farms and local companies.”
Also, Herman said his family has been farming at its Heffley property for more than 20 years. Now they are using their knowledge of local produce – and connections with other area farmers and producers – to offer a wide assortment of Kamloops goods. Even in the winter, Herman said, Nu Leaf Produce will carry as much local product as possible. If it can’t be found locally, it will be imported. But, that’s just in the off-season.
More information to come as Nu Leaf comes up on its first summer season.

14: Old Town Farm Market Kamloops Ltd

Old Town has three store locations, with the other two in Kelowna and Penticton. The three stores share most of their food suppliers.
Manager Mike Frye told me that, "local is always better and it's what people want."
The store carries apples from Oliver year-round, save for occassional varieties that come from New Zealand. Old Town also carries pears from Oliver.
The store's potatoes are from Washington in the winter, but Kamloops in the summer. Frye said he finds it difficult to get quality local potatoes in the winter.
In the summer, peaches, nectarines and plums will all come from the Okanagan.
Old Town carries honey from Hill Top, which is from Pritchard, as well as Elias honey coming from Prince George.
Squeaky Cheese is from Armstrong, and Gort's Gouda from Salmon Arm.
In the summer, local farmers will bring produce and fruit in, and Frye says the store will do its best to buy some and sell it.
In the winter, B.C. produce is much less available, but in addition to the apples, honey and cheese, the store does carry B.C. hothouse cucumbers and tomatoes.

For local meat, Summit carries beef from the Heffley Lake area. When it runs out, Summit orders Alberta beef via a company in Vancouver (the animals cannot be sourced and may be feedlot beef).
Summit Meats also carries Riverfresh Salmon (see map), and has more of it in the summer when it's more available.
Summit's lamb comes from the Fraser Valley. When cuts run out, which doesn't happen often, lamb is ordered from New Zealand.
Chicken comes from a Chilliwack company called 'Farm Fed,' as well as from Armstrong.
Summit's pork is from Chilliwack and is antibiotic and hormone-free.
Summit Meats carries Halal products.
