The Guardian's Martin Chulov reports that Gaddafi loyalists have retaken the town of Brega, just 250km from Benghazi. Chulov reports at least 12 people being treated with gunshot wounds. Chulov reports seeing a Gadaffi fighter jet today fly in low towards Bregga and dropping a bomb 200 meters away in the sand. Another, report (unconfirmed) states that at about 8AM 75 Toyota landcruisers arrived unexpectedly in Brega. Eventually, the 45 vehicles were surrounded, and the attackers that did not run away were arrested. The repot claims that those captured were given food, shelter and invited to join the revolution.

Guardian's Peter Beaumont reports that fighting began in the town of Zawiyah, 19 miles from Tripoli, after several military vehicles carrying government soldiers, from the Khamis Brigade, tried to enter the town. Around 12 modern tanks were moved to Zawiyah, and 6 BM-21 truck-mounted Grad rocket-launchers. Protestors managed to damage a tank with a rocket-propelled grenade, after which the mercenaries fled. 10 soldiers were killed in the exchange of fire. A resident reports that Gadaffi had called the tribal leader of the town, Mohammed al-Maktouf, and said that if the rebels did not leave the main square by early Tuesday, the town would be hit by warplanes.

New York Times is now reporting one witness at Green Square, Tripoli as seeing; "armed militiamen firing on protesters who were clashing with riot police. As a group of protesters and police officers faced off in a neighborhood near Green Square, in the capital, Tripoli, ten or so Toyota pickup trucks carrying more than 20 men in mismatched fatigues arrived at the scene.
Holding small automatic weapons, they started firing in the air, and then at the protesters, who scattered, the witness said. “It was an obscene amount of gunfire,” said the witness. “They were strafing these people. People were running in every direction.” The police stood by and watched, the witness said, as the militiamen, still shooting, chased after the protesters."

A report from an eyewitness in a southwestern suburb of Tripoli described seeing 3 Chinook helicopters heading north towards the center of the city. The Chinooks passes 30 minutes before fixed wing jets started flying and the helicopters made several passes traveling southbound and northbound again, clearly dropping off something and loading up again. He said he heard fighter jets roaring and described them as making sharp turns from a distance several times, it seemed, over the same area. This would support other reports that the aircraft were targeting ammunitions depots within cities. The witness said that from a distance he could hear loud high calibre rounds being fired once every few seconds, as if one was taking aim, and then firing.
