Denmark TOUR on bike (Jutland):
Click for first stage

Route around the Jutland's peninsula following clockwise route from the North Sea (between 6000 km). We start in he center in Billund, where the Legoland park and airport to go to the southwest, and then in Esbjerg we join the North Sea route to the top of the peninsula, Skagen (which in Denmark is Danish National route becomes n.1). In between we deviate a little to take the National Route 5, Denmark (Limfjord). From Skagen we go down to the middle, Aalborg and we head Aharus where we also have airport to go out.

SUMMARY OF THE ROUTE
Denmark is a paradise for cyclists, and they have developed an inmense web of bike paths, and they have marked 3 categories of routes. National routes that crosses the country entirely, regional routes and local routes. The most important is National Route number 1, that is part of the great North Sea Route of Europe, than starts in Scotland and ends in Norway. This trip starts in Billund, just in the center of Jutland, where you have and airport. Here you can visit Legoland. We start heading south west following some regional routes with bike paths and secondary roads, to reach Esbjerg. Here we join the National Route number 1, heading north and north-east all the time. The most common landscape is to ride between the sands of the dune, that is moving every year because of the winds, between the sea and some lakes or cultived lands. It's also common to cross little villages of second residences between the sands and protected by the dune from the wind. It's also a constant to see the bunkers, built in the dunes during the second war to protect from alliad invasion. Many of them have fallen to the sand of the beach. You also see the struggle of the denmark people with the sand and the wind, that reduces the cliffs and puts some houses and roads at border of abism.
In this wild landscapes you ride next two stages, till we arrive at Thyboron, where you take a ferry to cross the bay and then we join the National route 5, the Limfjord. We enter in more gentle landscapes, a little hilly between harvested fields and the Limfjord, that makes all the north part of Jutland an island separated from the south. Another constant are the wind mills for electricity in the horizon. You allways see more of 5 or 6. We make here two stages till reach Blockus, once more in the Nort Sea, and in two stages more wild than the first two of the North Sea Route, we reach Skagen, with the very interesting Grenen point, one of the more visited of Denmark, where the sands of two beaches finish in and edge and where the waves of two seas fights and crash together.
With the help of a train we reach Frederickshawn and we head to Aalborg, a beautiful city in the Limfjord. One more stage and the help of the train we reach Aahrus between hilly landscapes between sunflowers, corn and other kind of planted fields. In Aharus, with many places to visit, we finish this lonely but lovely trip in the country of the bikes.

WHICH BIKE
The better is a trekking bike. We follow many paved cycle paths or secondary roads, but also there are some places where you ride on the sand of the bank, following National Route n.1.

WHEN TO GO
Best time is late spring and summer, because of the lenght of the day, thing that let be the stages more relaxed.

HOW TO GET THERE
Plane to Billund is the better way to start, and plane from Ahrus to get off. But there are bus connections between the two aiports so it increases the possible combinations.

WHERE TO STAY
Best way is to stay in DanHostels, a serie of hostels spotted in all the country, that are relativety cheap (compared with the prices of the country) and they have very confortable rooms. http://www.danhostel.dk/. Caabin is also a chain of hotels interesting. And you can find some bed&breakfasts also.

DIFFICULTIES
The route is very flat, with almost no dificulties. But the most important is the wind. If you do this route clocwise is the better. Wind heads mostly from south west, so all the route to Skagen is quite easy. But when you turn down the wind can be very strong and difficults the riding. Roads have little traffic, and there are bikelines in almost beside all roads. And the North Sea number 1 passes to many non paved paths, which are difficult to ride in some parts because of the sand. Very intersting some parts when you ride directly on the beach.
