Site Description: We will be traveling to Alabama to work with the issues of AIDS. We arecountering with two AIDS coalitions in the city: AIDS Alabama andBirmingham AIDS Outreach. They have asked us to do Arts and Crafts withthe people who visit the organizations and help them out with othertasks around the site. We are also looking forward to helpingBirmingham AIDS outreach with one of their main fundraisers takingplace the week that we are there. On our free day we are planning onvisiting the civil rights museum and monuments in Birmingham.

Site Description: Our trip is going to Congaree National Park near Columbia, South Carolina. Congaree is home to the largest remnant of old-growth floodplain forest remaining on the continent and is the newest and only national park in South Carolina. We will work with the National Park Service to replace back country bridges, fencing, non-native plant control, and hardwood removal in longleaf pine area.

Site Description: The Charleston trip is focusing on volunteering with children with disabilities. We will be taking advantage of the multiple non-profits in the area and varying our work. Some of our activities include therapeutic riding, adaptive gardening and adaptive baseball. We will be exploring how the Charleston community has improved the quality of life for those with disabilities through their recreational therapies.
Issue: Urban Issues
Year: 2011
Site Description: The theme of our trip is Urban issues, and this specifically would be an urban agriculture project that could entail planting trees, cultivating gardens, or something along those lines. On Monday and Tuesday, we have a full day activity planned with an organization called Greening of Detroit. On Wednesday and Thursday we are booked to work with two agencies. In the morning we are going to work at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. In the afternoon we will switch over to the Gleaners food bank.
Issue: Native American Reservation

Site Description:Our trip is going to the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation in EagleButte, South Dakota. There we will be working on a Native AmericanReservation and doing Habitat for Humanity. The housing crisis withinNative American Reservations is a huge issue that needs to be dealtwith. Most reservations are extremely poor and do not have enoughhousing for the inhabitant. We will be working directly with the EagleButte Habitat for Humanity hanging drywall and working on other housingprojects. We will also be exposed to the Cheyenne River Sioux cultureas they will be hosting us with an authentic meal and allowing us touse their Sweat Lodge.

Site Description: We will be going to Felton, MN to work with Riding on Angels Wings. This is an organization that provides therapeutic horseback riding to people with disabilities. The riders range in levels and types of disabilities and are of varying age. Our group will be helping the riders with their lessons, doing maintenance around the facility and possibly organizing a special event for the riders at the end of the week.
Issue: Habitat for Humanity

Site Description: We will be leading a trip to Knoxville, TN to work with local issues such as homelessness and poverty. We will mainly be working with the local Habitat for Humanity. Some work that we will be doing will consist of building a floor system, prepping a jobsite for multi-house builds, building sheds and landscaping. We are hoping to leave Knoxville with a better understanding of the local culture, and providing as much help as we possibly can.

Site Description: We will be focusing on food access issues affecting the youth of metropolitan Louisville. The trip is designed to address this dilemma two-fold. First volunteers will have an opportunity to work hands on with urban students at Oxmoor Farms by teaching them the value of fresh foods through gardening, constructing an outdoor kitchen and facilitating on-farm educational experiences for youth. Second volunteers will be able to work with University of Louisville’s School of Public Health by surveying the metro area for two new ‘Healthy in a Hurry’ corner stores, which provide local produce and healthier food options for families at an affordable rate. Throughout the week volunteers will also be creating a mini-documentary in conjunction with the students of a local middle school around the issue of food access.

Site Description: Our group will be heading to Memphis to volunteer at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. There, we will be engaging pediatric patients and siblings in arts and crafts and games in the hospital playroom. We will also get the opportunity to visit with individual kids and teens being treated at the hospital.

Issue: Rebuilding, Habitat, Urban Issues, Homelessness/Poverty
Site Description: The 2010 NOLA trip is working with Beacon of Hope, an organization dedicated to rebuilding the French Quarter. We will be doing hands-on work and getting to know the people who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. This includes building houses, creating gardens, talking with New Orleans residents, and learning more about life in a disaster-torn world.

Site Description: Our trip will be going to Niceville, Florida to work on Gulf Coast Ecosystem restoration through community collaborations international. We will be participating in various projects to help restore the Gulf Coast and combat the effects of the oil spill in 2010. We will be working with salt marsh and sea grass restoration as well as coastal dune and oyster reef restoration. Each of these have been devastated by the oil spill and their restoration is essential to sustain the lush coastal environment of Pensacola.

Site Description: Our trip is going to the Carolina Tiger Rescue, where we will be assisting with assigned projects such as clearing vines and brush from enclosures, building and dismantling fences, digging trenches for drainage or other small construction tasks. This non-profit organization specializes in the education and conservation of wild cats. Many of these animals are either rescued or part of captive breeding programs for endangered carnivores.

Site Description: We are going to Slick Rock, Colorado for our Alternative Spring Break. We will be working with the Bureau of Land Management on various environmental projects. Some of these projects include cutting tamarisk plants that deplete water from the wild horses drinking supply, building a fence for an outdoor educational garden and cleaning up walking trails.

Site Description: We will be working for a nonprofit organization, 4 Paws for Ability, that trains service dogs for people with disabilities. 4 Paws for Ability enriches the lives of people with disabilities by training and placing service dogs with individuals to provide companionship and promote independent living. Our job as a group will be to: bring the dogs around to local establishments, acclimate them to being in social systems, as well as other various tasks.
