The operation is jointly owned by AngloGold Ashanti and Iamgold, who each have an effective holding of 41%, while theGovernment of Mali owns the remaining 18%. The International Finance Corporation originally held 6% of the mine put sold this share equally to Anglo and Iamgold in December 2009.
Apart from Sadiola and the near-by Yatela Mine, AngloGold Ashanti's also operates the Morila Gold Mine in Mali. The production of its mines in Mali contributed 8 percent to the company's overall production in 2008
The Yatela Mine is an open-pit gold mine situated near Yatela, 25 km north of Sadiola, in the Kayes Region of Mali. It is a single-pit operation. Commencing operation in 2001, heap leaching together with carbon-loading is carried out at a rate of approximately 2.9 million tonnes per year. The final step of eluting carbon and smelting the gold in the gold recovery process is completed at the Sadiola Gold Mine.
Apart from Yatela and Sadiola, AngloGold Ashanti's also operates the Morila Gold Mine in Mali. The production of its mines in Mali contributed 8 percent to the company's overall production in 2008
The Morilla Gold Mine is an open-pit gold mine situated 180 km south of Bamako, near the community of Sanso, in the Sikasso Region of Mali. The operation is jointly owned by AngloGold Ashanti and Randgold Resources, who each have an effective holding of 40% through jointly-owned Morila Limited, while the Government of Mali owns the remaining 20%.
Apart from Morila, AngloGold Ashanti's also ownes part of the Sadiola and the Yatela Mine in Mali. The production of its mines in Mali contruibuted 8% to the company's overall production in 2008.
The mine was operated by AngloGold Ashanti, but operations were taken over by Randgold in 2008
Gold Project (not Mine)
The mine is located in the south of Mali approximately 30kms from the Côte d’Ivoire border and 300km southeast of the capital Bamako.
Resolute Mining has an 80% interest in the project through its equity in Sociêtê des Mines de Syama S.A. (SOMISY). The Malian Government holds a 20% interest in SOMISY. The Syama project produced 24,762 ounces of gold in 2009.
The Loulo mine currently consists of two main open pits, Yalea and Gara, smaller satellite pits and the new Yalea underground mine. A second underground mine, Gara, is at its final planning stage (check date). Total resources at Loulo, including satellite deposits, currently stand at 11.41 million ounces of gold of which 9.18 million are in the measured and indicated categories. Open pit reserves currently total 0.88 million ounces and underground reserves, 6.32 million ounces.
In 2008, 26.23 tonnes of material were mined and 258 095 ounces of gold produced. The mine production is planned to ramp up to 400 000 ounces by 2011 once the underground mines are fully operational.
Avnel Gold Mining Limited owns and operates the Kalana exploitation permit in Mali through its 80% owned Malian subsidiary, SOMIKA. The Kalana exploitation permit covers an area of 387 sq. kilometres on which the Kalana Mine is located. The Kalana Mine produced approximately 80,000 ounces in the period 1985-1991. SOMIKA re-commissioned the mine and plant facilities in 2003 and gold production commenced in 2004. To mid-2009 100,000 ounces have been recovered from the underground mine, which has a mineral resource base of 886,000 ounces ( Measured and Indicated Category) and 257,000 ounces (Inferred Category), estimated at 31 December 2008.
Randgold Resources has recently discovered a gold deposit at Gounkoto, 25km south of the Loulo complex.
Uranium - Founded in 1969 following the discovery of uranium, it has grown around the mining industry, developed by the French government. Two large uranium mines, at Arlit and nearby Akouta, are exploited by open top strip mining. One open pit mine was built in 1971 by the National Mining Company of Niger, SOMAIR. The Second open pit mine, as well as a third underground mine, was built by the French Compagnie Minière d'Akouta (orCOMINAK).[2] All the ore from both is now processed and transported by a French company Areva NC, a holding of the Areva group, itself a state owned operation of the French Commissariat à l'énergie atomique (CEA). The system of French nuclear power generation, as well as the French nuclear weapons program, is dependent on uranium mined at Arlit.[3] Areva alone employs 1600 foreign nationals on the site.[4]
In 2006 3434 tonnes of uranium were extracted from the Arlit mines and exported to France via truck to the seaport at Cotonou, Bénin. At its peak in the 1980s, 40 % of Niger's uranium production came from Arlit, and uranium represented 90 % of Niger's exports (by value). A major modern road, known as the Uranium Highway, has been built to transport uranium south, but it has bypassed many towns along the way (In-Gall for example) and has radically changed Niger's transportation system.
AFRICOM training
2010: GEN. WARD: No, no, AFRICOM has not asked to set up in Gao or Tamanrasset. We have conducted training activities in those locations, as we have in other parts of the continent, as well. But in no way does it reflect any permanent presence.

Lere is just south of Lake Faguibine, an area frequented by AQIM convoys. In June 2010, a joint Malian-Mauritanian force chased AQIM fighters into the Lere area after it attacked AQIM camps located in Wagadou Forest, on the Mali-Mauritania border.
