If Assad cannot hold onto Syria, he will create an Alawite breakaway nation centered on the Latakia/Tartous region. This is why his forces have been committing a pattern of ethnic cleaning against Sunni villages in Homs province and has largely depopulated Homs. Assad will attempt to retain Homs and Hama for his breakaway nation.
