I had worked the late shift the night before so when the phone rang at 9:00 am, it woke me up. It was my brother calling to tell me that a plane had hit the world trade center -- I didn't believe him. (In retrospect it’s amazing that his call got through) By the time I got myself together, out of bed and awake - I turned on the TV - but there was no reception (I didn't have cable). Then I climbed up on my roof only to see a dozen neighbors doing the same thing: staring unbelievably at a massive white and black plume of smoke that once was my pristine view of the twin towers.
