WaterAid | Rehabilitation of traditional wells

Open wells like the one pictured above can be hazardous to childeren and disabled people.

In the areas around Bamako safe water is scarce; the water coverage barely reaches 30%. Many local people use traditional wells as a source of drinking water but these are often dangerous to use and, because they are not protected, open to contamination and pollution.

WaterAid and its partners are helping communities in suburban settlements around Bamako to rehabilitate their traditional wells. Cheap, local materials are being used so that communities can maintain these rehabilitated water supplies in the future.
