Alexander Hernandez-Apale, 18. The teen was fatally stabbed on Aug. 31 by three men who mistook him for a rival gang member. Duane Everett Corbett, 24; Maciel Munoz, 19; and Nicholas Josue Sias, 24, were arrested and each charged with one count of murder about two weeks after the attack. Hernandez- Apale and a friend, Jesus Trejo, were walking home on Southwest Hall Boulevard about 11:30 p.m. when a car pulled up and three men, one holding a large knife, got out and began a chase that turned deadly. Prosecutors said the three men were equally responsible for the killing, regardless of who inflicted seven stab wounds. Attorneys for the men admitted they all played a role in the assault but said they didn't intend for Hernandez- Apale to die. Police said the men belong to a local Sureno gang, the assassinos, which wars with another Sureno subset, Tepa. Hernandez- Apale had friends in Tepa, but he never belonged to a gang. Hernandez- Apale was stabbed three times in the right side of his chest, puncturing a lung, and twice in his right arm and twice in his back. State medical examiner Karen Gunson testified that when the teen arrived at the hospital about 16 minutes later, he had lost nearly all the blood in his body. He died of massive blood loss the next day. Corbett, Munoz and Sias were each convicted of aggravated murder and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.
