This is the primary area for Somalia Pirates hijacking ships. Pirates often launch fast boats from "motherships" operating in the Gulf of Aden along the Yemen coast, in the main shipping lane. After seizing the ships using shoulder-fired rockets, machine guns, or grenades, the pirates usually move the vessels to an area along the Somali coast near the towns of Hobyo or Eyl, to hold them for ransom.
